Bottom-up estimation of material stocks and flows in Toronto's road network

Bradley Kloostra et al.

Summary: Improving resource efficiency is crucial for reducing the environmental impacts of the built environment. Existing research often relies on archetypes to simplify analysis, overlooking the material consumption of other urban structures. This study shows that using archetypes can lead to asymmetric estimation errors and obscure spatial variability in material use. The stocks of concrete, asphalt, and granular materials in Toronto's road network were found to be unevenly distributed. Governments should provide high quality data and efforts should be made to capture, collate, and share this information more widely.

Material flow analysis study of asphalt in an Austrian municipality

Daniel Grossegger

Summary: The large quantity and long service time of construction have a crucial impact on the flow of resources. By reducing waste disposal and increasing recycling rates, the consumption of primary raw materials can be reduced. Previous research has shown that maintenance plays an increasing role in the material input and output in the transportation infrastructure sector. This study investigated the flows and stocks of asphalt in an Austrian municipality's road network and found that maintenance and road layout improvements contributed to an increase in asphalt stocks. Output of asphalt includes reclaimed asphalt, excess asphalt during construction, and asphalt dispersed from the road due to deterioration.

How much infrastructure is required to support decent mobility for all? An exploratory assessment

Doris Virag et al.

Summary: Decarbonizing transport is crucial for achieving climate targets, but meeting the growing mobility demands is a challenge. A study explores the relationship between mobility levels, infrastructure, and well-being. It finds that above a certain level of mobility infrastructure, further increase does not result in significant gains in well-being. This suggests that there is a limit to the benefits of high mobility and infrastructure development.

High-Resolution Maps of Material Stocks in Buildings and Infrastructures in Austria and Germany

Helmut Haberl et al.

Summary: The study presents an alternative approach for mapping material stocks based on high-resolution EO imagery and OpenStreetMap data, with a focus on Austria and Germany. The method yields more complete results compared to other data sources and avoids the use of costly cadastral data, making it suitable for mapping larger areas and tracing trends over time.

Urban Scaling and the Benefits of Living in Cities

Lorraine Sugar et al.

Summary: Complexity science tools can better understand city development processes, with the urban scaling laws being power-law relationships between city size and other characteristics. Theoretical models introduce a parameter called net urban benefit, which plays a critical role in measuring city sustainability.

Global scenarios of resource and emission savings from material efficiency in residential buildings and cars

Stefan Pauliuk et al.

Summary: Material production accounts for a quarter of global greenhouse gas emissions. Resource efficiency and circular economy strategies have the potential to reduce cumulative emissions by 20-52 Gt CO2-eq from residential buildings and 13-26 Gt CO2e-eq from cars by 2050.
