Cost and Energy Metrics for Municipal Water Reuse

Daniel E. Giammar et al.

Summary: This study provides information on the current technological and regulatory statuses of municipal reuse and compares cost and energy metrics for different treatment trains and water sources. The results show that a carbon-based treatment train has lower cost and energy consumption compared to a reverse osmosis-based treatment train. Municipal reuse has lower cost and energy consumption than seawater but higher values than brackish water. The study also highlights the sensitivity of cost metrics to changes in capital cost, on-stream capacity, and plant life. Assessments and scenario analyses can inform reuse adoption and improve cost-effectiveness and energy efficiency.

Electrochemical dehalogenation of dibromomethane and 1,2-dibromoethane to non-toxic products using a carbon fiber brush electrode

David Fernandez-Verdejo et al.

Summary: The electrochemical degradation of DBM and DBA follows first-order kinetics, with the kinetic constant increasing as the cathode potential decreases. During the process, most of the bromide in DBM and DBA is released as bromine ions, with non-brominated compounds such as methane and ethene being detected. The effluent was confirmed to be non-toxic, indicating the potential for a simple and non-toxic electrochemical approach for removing aliphatic brominated compounds from water sources.

Quantitative structure activity relationships (QSARs) and machine learning models for abiotic reduction of organic compounds by an aqueous Fe(II) complex

Yidan Gao et al.

Summary: This study developed predictive models for the abiotic reduction of 60 organic compounds using both conventional chemical descriptor-based and machine learning approaches, finding that the machine learning model provided similar prediction accuracy to conventional QSARs across all compound classes and conditions.
