Selective Methylation by an ArsM S-Adenosylmethionine Methyltransferase from Burkholderia gladioli GSRB05 Enhances Antibiotic Production

Jian Chen et al.

Summary: Arsenic methylation is an important process in the biogeochemical cycle of arsenic, and the arsM gene encoding an arsenite S-adenosylmethionine methyltransferase is widely distributed in different organisms. B. gladioli GSRB05 is capable of synthesizing DMAs(V), and the heterologous expression of the BgarsM gene in E. coli confers resistance to MAs(III) but not As(III). Both strains can methylate MAs(III) and the AST precursor, but not inorganic As(III). The presence of an insertion sequence reduces the fitness of B. gladioli but increases its ability to produce AST.

Sulfate addition and rising temperature promote arsenic methylation and the formation of methylated thioarsenates in paddy soils

Chuan Chen et al.

Summary: In paddy soils, sulfate reducing bacteria play a key role in driving both arsenic methylation and thiolation processes, with sulfate addition and rising temperature increasing the activity of these microorganisms and promoting the production of toxic compounds.
