Combined anodic and cathodic hydrogen production from aldehyde oxidation and hydrogen evolution reaction

Tehua Wang et al.

Summary: This study presents a hydrogen production system that combines anodic and cathodic H-2 production from low-potential aldehyde oxidation and the hydrogen evolution reaction, respectively, at a low voltage of about 0.1V. Unlike conventional aldehyde electrooxidation, the low-potential aldehyde oxidation enables the hydrogen atom to recombine into H-2 gas. The assembled electrolyser requires only about 0.35 kWh of electricity input per m(3) of H-2, providing a promising avenue for the safe, efficient and scalable production of high-purity hydrogen.

Dynamically Formed Surfactant Assembly at the Electrified Electrode-Electrolyte Interface Boosting CO2 Electroreduction

Wangxin Ge et al.

Summary: This study investigates the influence of bias potential on the interfacial microenvironment and catalytic selectivity using CO2 and H2O electrochemical co-reduction on commercial electrodes with surfactant additives. The results reveal that the bias potential leads to a transformation of the surfactant structure from random distribution to ordered assembly, which regulates the water environment and promotes CO2 enrichment at the electrified interface. This hydrophobic-aerophilic interface microenvironment reduces the water dissociation activity and increases the selectivity of CO2 electroreduction to CO.

A kinetic model for 2,4-dichlorophenol adsorption and hydrodechlorination over a palladized biofilm

Chengyang Wu et al.

Summary: The adsorption and catalytic hydrodechlorination of 2,4-DCP by Pd0NPs associated with a biofilm were investigated. The Pd0-biofilm showed higher adsorption capacity and better catalytic performance compared to abiotic Pd0NPs film. The coupling of Pd0NPs with the biofilm promoted the removal and full dechlorination of 2,4-DCP, even at low concentrations in bulk water.

Surface Ligand Environment Boosts the Electrocatalytic Hydrodechlorination Reaction on Palladium Nanoparticles

Guangming Jiang et al.

Summary: By incorporating the TEAC ligand into the surface of Pd nanoparticles, an enhanced catalytic efficiency for the electrocatalytic hydrodechlorination (EHDC) reaction was achieved, outperforming most of the previously reported catalysts and demonstrating environmental benignity towards halogenated organic pollutants. This work suggests that tuning NP catalysis using facile ligand post-treatment may lead to new strategies to improve EHDC for environmental remediation applications.

Hydrophobic Copper Interfaces Boost Electroreduction of Carbon Dioxide to Ethylene in Water

Hong-Qing Liang et al.

Summary: In this study, the effect of the electrode-electrolyte interface on CO2 reduction in water was investigated by coating CuO electrodes with polymers of varying hydrophilicities/phobicities. Results showed that hydrophobic polymers significantly enhanced the activity, selectivity, and stability of CuO-derived electrodes. This improvement in catalytic performance may be attributed to restricted water diffusion and a higher local pH near the electrode surface caused by hydrophobic polymers.

Local Field Induced Mass Transfer: New Insight into Nano-electrocatalysis

Yinghuan Liu et al.

Summary: Unravelling the complex kinetics of electrocatalysis is crucial for designing high-performance electrocatalysts, with mass transfer and electron transfer being key factors to optimize. The use of nanocatalysts can enhance electrocatalytic reactions by improving electron transfer, but their nanoscale size may lead to inhomogeneous local electric fields affecting mass transfer. Introducing the concept of local-field-induced mass transfer in nano-electrocatalytic systems may provide new insights for future nano-electrocatalyst design.

Elucidating the Role of Single-Atom Pd for Electrocatalytic Hydrodechlorination

Dahong Huang et al.

Summary: In this study, Pd catalysts were loaded onto reduced graphene oxide (rGO) in a single-atom fashion, showing significantly improved electrocatalytic performance for hydrodechlorination reactions compared to Pd nanoparticles. The single-atom Pd-1 catalyst enhances Pd atomic efficiency and suppresses catalyst poisoning, leading to cost reduction and increased efficiency in practical applications. The superior performance of Pd-1/rGO is attributed to enhanced electron transfer and increased hydrogen utilization efficiency, showcasing the potential of single-atom catalysts in environmental remediation applications.
