Reduction in Precipitation Seasonality in China from 1960 to 2018

Y. U. N. A. MAO et al.

Summary: Changes in precipitation seasonality in China show an increasing trend from southeastern to northwestern regions, with decreased precipitation, later wet season start, and shorter wet season duration. The seasonality index in China has decreased from 1960 to 2018, particularly in climate-sensitive basins in northern China. El Nino-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) dominates the interannual fluctuations and spatial patterns of precipitation seasonality in China.

Event-Based Evaluation of the GPM Multisatellite Merged Precipitation Product From 2014 to 2018 Over China: Methods and Results

Runze Li et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the performance of the Integrated MultisatellitE Retrievals for Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) (IMERG) V06B product using hourly rain gauge data from approximately 50,000 stations in China. The results revealed biases in event properties of IMERG, which have important implications for applications like flood forecasting and storm identification. The study also indicated the necessity of considering event dynamics and stage information in satellite precipitation retrieval processes.

Advancing Satellite Precipitation Retrievals With Data Driven Approaches: Is Black Box Model Explainable?

Zhi Li et al.

Summary: Satellite-based precipitation retrieval is a longstanding scientific problem, and advances in machine learning/deep learning approaches have shown potential to improve accuracy. This study applied a ML/DL-based model pipeline to AMSU data and found significant performance gains by incorporating precipitation identification and classification components. Additionally, the study explored the interpretability of the black box model and highlighted the importance of certain frequency channels in precipitation retrieval.

Global precipitation system size

Yan Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the global distribution of precipitation system size and its relationships with various precipitation parameters using data from 2015-2019. Results show that large precipitation systems are more common over oceans, while medium-sized systems dominate over most land areas. There are strong positive correlations between precipitation system size and precipitation amount, frequency, intensity, and duration, especially in tropical regions.

An entropy-based approach for the optimization of rain gauge network using satellite and ground-based data

Claudia Bertini et al.

Summary: This study presents a method to optimize a ground-based rainfall network using satellite-based observations, ranking potential sensor locations with a greedy algorithm based on their contribution to network entropy. Results show that satellite observations can successfully optimize rainfall monitoring networks, with the most informative locations in areas of high rainfall variability.

Spatial correlations of daily precipitation over mainland China

Conghui Fan et al.

Summary: Knowledge of spatial correlations of precipitation is crucial for various applications such as data collection, downscaling strategies, and paleoclimate reconstructions. Analysis of daily precipitation data in China revealed differences in spatial correlation models across regions, with western regions showing more localized rain events. Spatial correlation distances were shorter in summer and dry years compared to winter and wet years, with subtle differences between wet and dry years. Different spatial models are suggested for different regions, seasons, and directions when interpolating daily precipitation for grid-based surface precipitation data sets.

Quantifying and adjusting the impact of urbanization on the observed surface wind speed over China from 1985 to 2017

Zhengtai Zhang et al.

Summary: The study found that the observed decreasing trend of surface wind speed (SWS) in China is the result of urbanization, which has reduced SWS by 11%. However, after adjustment, it was discovered that SWS began to recover in the 1990s, showing almost zero decreasing trend during the study period.
