Optical detection of microplastics in water

Ahmet H. Iri et al.

Summary: Plastic pollution poses a significant threat to marine ecosystems, with the need for low-cost, portable microplastic detection systems becoming increasingly important. A prototype device based on an optical system has been developed, costing less than $370, capable of detecting microplastics in water at concentrations below 0.015% w/v. The designed portable device is expected to be widely used globally to monitor microplastic content in a more convenient and cost-effective manner.

Towards the Development of Portable and In Situ Optical Devices for Detection of Micro-and Nanoplastics in Water: A Review on the Current Status

Benjamin O. Asamoah et al.

Summary: This review discusses the utilization of various optical measurement methods for screening microplastics from their natural environments, with a focus on in situ detection techniques and the development of portable optical sensors. The potential of remote sensing methods and the necessity of integrated optical solutions for continuous detection of water-based microplastics are highlighted.

Searching Nanoplastics: From Sampling to Sample Processing

Marina Cerasa et al.

Summary: This paper reviews the analytical method steps of nanoplastics (NPs), focusing on often underestimated first steps: laboratory tests, sampling, and sample processing. Most errors and the quality of the analyses often depend on these steps. Additionally, newly introduced sample processing methods were examined.
