Effects of heavy metals on bacterial community structures in two lead-zinc tailings situated in northwestern China

Haijuan Li et al.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the changes in bacterial communities in heavy metal contaminated soils from two tailings in northwestern China. The results showed that both heavy metals and soil chemical properties influenced the structure and diversity of bacterial communities. Certain bacterial phyla, such as Proteobacteria and Firmicutes, were found to increase significantly in the tailing soils. Certain species, including Thiobacillus (Proteobacteria), Sulfobacillus (Firmicutes), and Leptospirillum ferriphilum (Nitrospirota), were considered to be highly tolerant to heavy metal contamination.

Soil contamination and health risk assessment from heavy metals exposure near mining area in Bac Kan province, Vietnam

Thanh Son Tran et al.

Summary: Mining activities in Vietnam have led to potential heavy metals contamination in the surrounding areas, with As and Pb concentrations exceeding the Vietnam standard for residential soil. Pollution indices indicate that Pb and As are the major contaminants near the Pb-Zn and Au mines. Statistical analysis suggests that the pollution sources near the Pb-Zn mine are a combination of anthropogenic and geogenic sources, while health risk assessment shows children are at higher risk than adults in both non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic risk.

Phytoextraction of metal(loid)s from contaminated soils by six plant species: A field study

Fangming Yu et al.

Summary: Phytoextraction is an effective in situ remediation technique that utilizes (hyper)accumulator plant species to extract metal(loid)s from contaminated soils. Field studies in China showed that Bidens pilosa and Xanthium strumarium are more effective in metal(loid) phytoextraction and can help improve and rebuild soil bacterial community composition in contaminated soils. Repeated planting of hyperaccumulators can lead to the reconstruction of soil microbial communities, enhancing their adaptability to metal(loid)-contaminated environments and improving their phytoextraction abilities.

Fungal community diversity of heavy metal contaminated soils revealed by metagenomics

Michel Rodrigo Zambrano Passarini et al.

Summary: The improper disposal of toxic compounds generated by industrial activities has had a significant impact on the environment. Microbial communities living in contaminated areas may offer ecological alternatives for the decontamination of environments. This study aimed to explore the diversity and functionality of fungi in stream sediments contaminated with heavy metals. The findings revealed diverse fungal orders, with Ascomycota being the most abundant. The presence of gene sequences related to DNA repair and heavy metals biosorption processes suggests the potential of these fungi for bioremediation. The study highlights the importance of metagenomic approaches in understanding fungal communities and their metabolic pathways in heavy metal-contaminated environments.

Immobilization of Cd and Pb in soil facilitated by magnetic biochar: metal speciation and microbial community evolution

Yinzhu Diao et al.

Summary: This study compared the effects of magnetic sewage sludge biochar (SSB) and rice straw biochar (RSB) on the immobilization of Cd and Pb in paddy soil. The results showed that both SSB and RSB could reduce the DTPA-extractable Cd and Pb, and increase the residual fraction of Cd and Pb. Furthermore, the addition of SSB and RSB also affected the soil pH, TOC content, and the diversity and composition of soil microbial community.

Simultaneously immobilization of Cd and Pb in paddy soil by magnetic modified biochar based on textile dyeing sludge: metal speciation and soil microbial community evolution

Yinzhu Diao et al.

Summary: This study investigates the immobilization mechanism of Cd and Pb by preparing biochar from textile dyeing sludge. The results show that the addition of biochar reduces the available and acid-soluble states content of Cd and Pb, increases soil pH and organic carbon content. Microbial community analysis reveals that the addition of biochar increases Actinobacteriota and Thiobacillus and decreases Bacteroidota in the soil.

Development of phosphorus composite biochar for simultaneous enhanced carbon sink and heavy metal immobilization in soil

Ying Luo et al.

Summary: This study proposes the production of phosphorus-composite biochar to enhance carbon sequestration and heavy metals immobilization. Results show that incorporating phosphorus increases the retention of pyrolytic carbon in biochar and enhances its stability. After incubation with soil, the phosphorus-composite biochar demonstrated higher carbon sequestration and heavy metals immobilization compared to pristine biochar. Additionally, the phosphorus-composite biochar intelligently alters soil microbial community, promoting the immobilization of heavy metals.

Effects of phosphorous precursors and speciation on reducing bioavailability of heavy metal in paddy soil by engineered biochars

Han Zhang et al.

Summary: Ammonium phosphate (AP), phosphoric acid (PC), and potassium phosphate (TKP) were employed to modify biochar for enhanced heavy metal passivation in soil. Different phosphorus precursors showed varying effects, with P speciation playing a crucial role in the immobilization of Cd2+. Specific phosphorus forms can promote the passivation of Cd2+ through complex formation, highlighting the potential for modified biochar in soil remediation based on P-related technologies.

Summary: The study found that different soil amendments have different effects on the physical properties of soil, with nano silica improving soil texture and promoting the formation of soil macro-aggregates. The other three amendments had no significant impact on soil composition and aggregate content, but all four remediation plots significantly reduced soil bulk density and increased porosity.
