Metabolic flexibility of aerobic methanotrophs under anoxic conditions in Arctic lake sediments

Ruo He et al.

Summary: The study found that aerobic Gammaproteobacterial methanotrophs dominate in assimilating CH4 under anoxic conditions in Arctic lakes, and these methanotrophs have the capacity to generate intermediates such as methanol, formaldehyde, and formate from CH4 oxidation. This expands the knowledge of aerobic methanotroph metabolic processes and suggests potential coupling of CH4 oxidation to iron reduction in the Arctic lakes.

Mainstream Nitrogen and Dissolved Methane Removal through Coupling n-DAMO with Anammox in Granular Sludge at Low Temperature

Sheng-Qiang Fan et al.

Summary: Mainstream anaerobic wastewater treatment for recovering methane-rich biogas faces challenges in nitrogen and dissolved methane removal at low temperatures. This study used granular sludge coupling n-DAMO with Anammox for efficient nitrogen removal and investigated dissolved methane removal potential at low temperatures. The research achieved stable nitrogen removal rates and high effluent quality in a lab-scale membrane granular sludge reactor. Granular sludge maintained activity even at low temperatures, with a compact structure and stable community composition during long-term operation. Energy recovery could be maximized by recovering dissolved methane, supporting high-level nitrogen removal.

Xiao-Min Li et al.

Summary: This study investigated the responses of electrotrophic communities in paddy soil to different long-term fertilization practices, revealing significant changes in the community structure. The dominant electrotrophs were identified as Streptomyces genus in the CK, M, and MNPK soils, while Proteobacteria and Firmicutes were major electrotrophs in the NPK soil. Furthermore, it was found that electrotrophs enhanced dissimilatory nitrate reduction to ammonium (DNRA) for all soils.

Simultaneous nitrate and sulfate dependent anaerobic oxidation of methane linking carbon, nitrogen and sulfur cycles

Wen-Bo Nie et al.

Summary: ANME archaea can mediate simultaneous sulfate- and nitrate-dependent anaerobic oxidation of methane, forming a crucial link between the carbon, nitrogen, and sulfur cycles in natural environments. They collaborate with sulfate-reducing bacteria to convert sulfate to sulfide and then sulfide-oxidizing autotrophic denitrifiers to oxidize sulfide back to sulfate, thereby alleviating sulfide accumulation. The unique nanonets formed by ANME-2d and SRB likely facilitate electron transfer, highlighting the complex interactions in methane oxidation processes.
