Assessment of the exposure to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in users of various tobacco/nicotine products by suitable urinary biomarkers

Gerhard Scherer et al.

Summary: Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are a class of chemicals that occur naturally and during incomplete combustions. Smokers have the highest exposure to PAHs, while users of electronic cigarettes, heated tobacco products, oral tobacco, and nicotine replacement therapy products are not distinguishable from non-users.

A Sensitive LC-MS/MS Method for the Quantification of 3-Hydroxybenzo[a]pyrene in Urine-Exposure Assessment in Smokers and Users of Potentially Reduced-Risk Products

Nadine Roegner et al.

Summary: A sensitive LC-MS/MS method was developed to quantify urinary 3-OH-BaP, which showed excellent accuracy, precision, and sensitivity. Application of this method in a clinical study revealed significantly higher levels of 3-OH-BaP in smokers compared to users of potentially reduced-risk products and non-users.
