Deterioration of air quality associated with the 2020 US wildfires

Mikalai Filonchyk et al.

Summary: The wildfires in the western part of the United States in 2020 had an unprecedented duration and wide coverage, significantly impacting air quality and posing health risks. Smoke aerosols emitted into the atmosphere led to deterioration in air quality across the region and beyond, affecting other states, Canada, and surrounding ocean areas.

Spatiotemporal variability of atmospheric CO2 concentration and controlling factors over sugarcane cultivation areas in southern Brazil

Luis Miguel da Costa et al.

Summary: This study characterized the spatial-temporal variability and main factors controlling atmospheric CO2 column in the macroregion of Ribeirao Preto, Sao Paulo, Brazil using remote sensing data. Negative correlations were found between Xco(2) and factors such as photosynthesis, relative humidity, and global radiation. Hotspots and coldspots of Xco(2) varied over the years.

Assessment of Smoke Pollution Caused by Wildfires in the Baikal Region (Russia)

Natalia V. Efimova et al.

Summary: Climate change has led to an increase in wildfires, resulting in longer and larger fire seasons. The study assessed the air pollution and health risks caused by smoke exposure during fire season, with findings showing significant increases in pollutant concentrations during wildfire periods, with higher health risks in industrial centers similar to Bratsk.

Analysis of 3D cloud effects in OCO-2 XCO2 retrievals

Steven T. Massie et al.

Summary: The presence of 3D cloud radiative effects in OCO-2 retrievals was demonstrated through an analysis of various data sets. 3D radiative perturbations from clouds were found to have a significant impact on XCO2 measurements, and specific metrics were used to quantify and mitigate these effects. Utilizing table lookup techniques based on cloud distance and spatial radiance heterogeneity metrics reduced the 3D cloud biases and improved XCO2bc-TCCON averages.

Fire, deforestation, and livestock: When the smoke clears

Rafael De Oliveira Silva et al.

Summary: The scrutiny of the reasons for the Amazon fires in 2019 reveals that the perceived link between deforestation and extensive land use for beef production is not as clear as commonly supposed. Sparing land through sustainable intensification of livestock pastures may act as a significant buffer between meat demand, livestock production, and consequent land use change and deforestation. Well-intentioned beef boycotts could weaken the incentive for pasture restoration, potentially leading to extensive land use and increased greenhouse gas emissions.
