The r/K selection theory and its application in biological wastewater treatment processes

Qidong Yin et al.

Summary: Understanding the characteristics of functional organisms is crucial for wastewater treatment. This review systematically characterized two types of strategists in wastewater treatment ecosystems and provided novel strategies for selectively enriching microbial community. The selection of r-/K-strategists depends on factors such as food-to-microorganism ratio, mass transfer, cell size, and biomass morphology. Practical applications include the concept of substrate flux for selective enrichment of r-/K-strategists.

Sustained nitrogen loss in a symbiotic association of Comammox Nitrospira and Anammox bacteria

Ekaterina Y. Gottshall et al.

Summary: The discovery of Comammox organisms has changed our understanding of the nitrogen cycle, with Nitrospira inopinata exhibiting high ammonia affinity but lower nitrite affinity. By forming synthetic communities with Anammox bacteria, a mutualistic relationship is established, highlighting the potential ecological and biotechnological applications of this cooperation.

Selective enrichment and metagenomic analysis of three novel comammox Nitrospira in a urine-fed membrane bioreactor

Jiyun Li et al.

Summary: The study successfully enriched comammox Nitrospira in a membrane bioreactor and discovered three new clade A comammox Nitrospira species. The findings suggest that urea in the urine media played a significant role in the selective enrichment of these novel comammox Nitrospira, supporting the diversity and versatility of their metabolism.
