Effects of polyester microfibers (PMFs) and cadmium on lettuce (Lactuca sativa) and the rhizospheric microbial communities: A study involving physio-biochemical properties and metabolomic profiles

Aurang Zeb et al.

Summary: The study found that both single microfibers and cadmium and their combination treatments had adverse effects on lettuce growth and photosynthesis, with the co-PMFs/Cd treatment significantly increasing antioxidant enzyme activity. The metabolite content in the leaves was significantly affected, with changes in nitrogen and carbohydrate metabolic pathways. The structure of rhizospheric bacterial communities changed, with significant alterations in key beneficial/functional bacteria.

Effects of polyethylene and polylactic acid microplastics on plant growth and bacterial community in the soil

Yuhang Lian et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of polyethylene MPs (PEMPs) and polylactic acid MPs (PLAMPs) on the physio-biochemical performance and metabolomic profile of soybean, as well as the bacterial communities in soil. The results showed that PEMPs had no toxicity on the plant growth, while 0.1% PLAMPs significantly reduced root length. MPs in plant leaves affected peroxidase (POD) and catalase (CAT) activities. Metabolomics study indicated that amino acid metabolism was the significantly affected pathway. Additionally, only 0.1% PLAMPs altered the bacterial communities in the rhizosphere soil.

Effect of polystyrene on di-butyl phthalate (DBP) bioavailability and DBP-induced phytotoxicity in lettuce

Minling Gao et al.

Summary: This study investigated the toxic effects of small and large polystyrene microplastics on lettuce under di-butyl phthalate stress. The results showed that microplastics, especially in combination with DBP, could decrease lettuce biomass, induce oxidative stress, and exacerbate subcellular damage. Additionally, PS adhered to root surfaces and caused physical blockage of root pores, leading to cell membrane and wall damage. Molecular docking revealed interactions between DBP and monobutyl phthalate with superoxide dismutase residues. Moreover, there was no statistical difference in phytotoxicity between nano- and microplastics on lettuce, with PS aggravating DBP-induced phytotoxicity.

Environmental fate, toxicity and risk management strategies of nanoplastics in the environment: Current status and future perspectives

Liuwei Wang et al.

Summary: Tiny plastic particles, including microplastics (MPs) and nanoplastics (NPs), are considered emerging contaminants with formation mechanisms such as mechanical abrasion. Research on the environmental fate and ecosystem toxicity of NPs is limited compared to MPs, calling for further exploration in these areas.

Influences of different source microplastics with different particle sizes and application rates on soil properties and growth of Chinese cabbage (Brassica chinensis L.)

Min Yang et al.

Summary: The experiment revealed that the application of microplastics can affect soil enzyme activity, plant growth, and leaf nutrient concentrations. The effects of microplastics varied depending on their type and particle size, indicating that the overaccumulation of microplastics in agriculture may pose an ecological risk and negatively impact agricultural sustainability and food safety.

Microplastics in freshwater and wild fishes from Lijiang River in Guangxi, Southwest China

Lishan Zhang et al.

Summary: The study found that microplastics in the Lijiang River are dominated by large-sized flakes and fibers, present in both freshwater and wild fishes. The most abundant polymer types in freshwater were polypropylene-polyethylene copolymer and polyethylene, while polyethylene terephthalate dominated in wild fishes.

Manal T. El-Sayed et al.

Summary: Various fungi isolated from different landfill sites in Sharqiyah Governorate, Egypt were evaluated for their biodegradation ability of black LDPE sheets. Aspergillus carbonarius MH 856457.1 and A. fumigatus MF 276893 were identified as good candidates for LDPE biodegradation. A mixed culture of two strains showed excellent weight loss% of LDPE sheets compared to single isolate, indicating a potential strategy for improving biodegradation efficiency.

Necla Pehlivan et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the morpho-physiological and molecular responses of maize seedlings exposed to different types and sizes of microplastics, revealing the detrimental effects on cell membrane stability, photosynthetic pigments, and photosynthetic capacity. Larger particles of microplastics were found to result in better cell restoration under microplastics-induced stress.

Foliar-applied polystyrene nanoplastics (PSNPs) reduce the growth and nutritional quality of lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.)

Jiapan Lian et al.

Summary: Foliar application of nanoplastics significantly impacts the growth and nutritional quality of lettuce, leading to decreased plant growth indicators and reduced plant pigment content, indicating the phytotoxicity of PSNPs. Furthermore, PSNPs also caused oxidative stress in lettuce leaves and a decrease in nutritional quality.
