Algae-containing raw water treatment and by-products control based on ClO2 preoxidation-assisted coagulation/precipitation process

Wei Song et al.

Summary: This study applied ClO2 preoxidation-assisted coagulation/precipitation process to improve raw water quality, especially for algae, turbidity, and explore the formation mechanisms of inorganic by-products. It was found that the optimal dosages of polymeric aluminum chloride (PAC) and ClO2 were 10 mg/L and 0.8 mg/L respectively, showing the best raw water treatment performance.

Organic enrichment can increase the impact of microplastics on meiofaunal assemblages in tropical beach systems

Cinzia Corinaldesi et al.

Summary: The study investigated the impacts of microplastic pollution and organic enrichment on meiofaunal distribution and diversity in the Maldivian archipelago. It found that the effects were more significant in the anthropized island, with increased abundance of opportunistic nematodes and copepods. The coexistence of chronic organic enrichment and microplastics may significantly increase ecological impacts on meiofaunal assemblages.

Uptake of Cu2+ by unicellular microalga Chlorella vulgaris from synthetic wastewaters is attenuated by polystyrene microspheres

Imania Ghaffar et al.

Summary: This study investigated the repressive effects of polystyrene microspheres on the functioning of unicellular green microalgae. The results showed that positively charged microspheres significantly affected the uptake of Cu2+ by the microalgae, while negatively charged microspheres did not. The size of the microspheres had little impact on the uptake potential. The findings of this study provide guidance for the design of cost-effective remediation systems.

Behaviors and biochemical responses of macroinvertebrate Corbicula fluminea to polystyrene microplastics

Lingtao Fu et al.

Summary: The study showed that high-concentration microplastics induced behavioral toxicity, oxidative stress, and tissue damage in Asian clams. Enzymes associated with energy supply were significantly enhanced at high-concentration treatments but recovered to a normal level after exposure. Overall, continuous exposure to microplastics (10 mg L-1) led to long-term effects on the health of Asian clams.

Microalgae-based removal of pollutants from wastewaters: Occurrence, toxicity and circular economy

Pankaj Bhatt et al.

Summary: Water bodies are contaminated with various pollutants, including antibiotics, pharmaceuticals, pesticides, heavy metals, and organic compounds. The removal of these hazardous chemicals is important, and physical, chemical, and biological approaches have been developed and implemented for wastewater treatment. Microbial and algal treatment methods have gained attention for their eco-friendly and sustainable nature, with microalgae being a potential organism for treating contaminated water bodies.

Roles of microplastic-derived dissolved organic matter on the photodegradation of organic micropollutants

Muxin Chen et al.

Summary: In this study, the researchers investigated the impact of microplastic-derived dissolved organic matter (MP-DOM) on the photodegradation of organic micropollutants in natural water. It was found that MP-DOM significantly inhibited the photodegradation process, primarily due to the inner filter effect and complexation effect. Furthermore, the researchers observed that polystyrene-derived dissolved organic matter (PS-DOM) exhibited high oxidation resistance, leading to the inhibition of photodegradation by transferring electrons to the intermediates.

Ageing affects microplastic toxicity over time: Effects of aged polycarbonate on germination, growth, and oxidative stress of Lepidium sativum

Stephan Pflugmacher et al.

Summary: The study found that exposure to new and short-term aged polycarbonate resulted in the most severe effects, while the adverse effects associated with polycarbonate exposure decreased with increasing aging time. The toxicity of new polycarbonate material is likely to decrease with the aging process over time.

Microplastics as vectors of the antibiotics azithromycin and clarithromycin: Effects towards freshwater microalgae

Miguel Gonzalez-Pleiter et al.

Summary: This study reveals that microplastics can serve as carriers of chemicals toxic to aquatic microorganisms, impacting the growth and chlorophyll content of cyanobacteria. Antibiotics sorbed on microplastics can be released upon contact with water, leading to observed toxicity to cyanobacteria.

Aged microplastics decrease the bioavailability of coexisting heavy metals to microalga Chlorella vulgaris

Zezheng Wang et al.

Summary: Environmental aging of ubiquitous microplastics affects the growth of microalgae, with aged microplastics showing greater inhibition than virgin microplastics. Heavy metals such as copper and cadmium also significantly inhibit cell growth, and toxicity increases with higher concentrations. The combined toxicity of aged microplastics with heavy metals is less than that of individual heavy metals, indicating a potential interaction between different pollutants.

2,4-D and dicamba removal from the surface of plastic mulch using overhead irrigation: analytical analysis and cucurbit bioassay crop response

Lavesta C. Hand et al.

Summary: Glyphosate and paraquat are effective herbicides for multicrop vegetable production, however, additional herbicides such as 2,4-D and dicamba can help control problematic weeds. It is important to remove these herbicides from plastic mulch prior to planting in order to avoid crop damage.
