Drivers of biomagnification of Hg, As and Se in aquatic food webs: A review

Leonomir Cordoba-Tovar et al.

Summary: Biomagnification of trace elements is increasingly evident in aquatic ecosystems, with mercury, arsenic, and selenium exhibiting different potential for biomagnification. The process is influenced by environmental and ecological factors, and involves key organisms.

Linking trophic ecology with element concentrations in a coastal fish community of the Bijagos Archipelago, West Africa

Edna Correia et al.

Summary: The concentrations of 13 elements in the muscle and liver of 17 coastal fish species in the Bijag & PRIME;os Archipelago, Guinea-Bissau were reported in this study. The results showed higher concentrations of certain elements in the liver than in the muscle tissue, except for Sr and Ca in all fish species. There was a significant increase in the concentrations of Hg and Se in muscle samples with increasing trophic ecology indicators, indicating biomagnification in the food chain.

Mercury levels in North Atlantic seabirds: A synthesis

Ingrid L. Pollet et al.

Summary: Mercury is globally distributed and has severe toxic effects on wildlife, particularly on top predators such as seabirds. Our study on mercury concentrations in seabirds from the North Atlantic revealed an increase in mercury levels in recent decades, with some exceeding the threshold for severe adverse effects.

Review of contaminant levels and effects in shorebirds: Knowledge gaps and conservation priorities

Yanju Ma et al.

Summary: Environmental pollution poses a major threat to bird populations, particularly shorebird populations. However, the negative impacts of pollution on shorebirds are understudied. Most studies on pollutant contamination in shorebirds are geographically biased, with a lack of research in East Africa, South Asia, and the Siberian Arctic. Common pollutants include mercury, cadmium, and lead, while emerging contaminants such as plastic debris/microplastics and antibiotics resistance are less studied. The research highlights the negative effects of pollutants on shorebirds' development, reproductive capacity, and flight performance.

Elemental composition of whole body soft tissues in bivalves from the Bijagos Archipelago, Guinea-Bissau

Teresa Catry et al.

Summary: Marine bivalves serve as bioindicators of coastal environmental pollution and are used in monitoring programs worldwide. This study compared the chemical composition of four common bivalve species from a pristine region in West Africa, revealing significant differences in element concentrations among species. Some species, such as the bloody cockle and oyster, showed higher concentrations of certain elements like Cd and Zn, while others had unique chemical profiles with varying levels of different elements.

Intraspecific variation of trace elements in the kelp gull (Larus dominicanus): influence of age, sex and location

Jorge Henrique Pedrobom et al.

Summary: The study on hepatic tissue of Larus dominicanus sampled on the coastline of the state of Santa Catarina in Brazil found differences in bioaccumulation of trace elements between female adults and male adults, with heat maps showing hot spots of high concentration of trace elements at certain locations. The concentration of trace elements in general was comparable to values reported in other studies for this species in South America and other regions, and heat maps proved to be a promising tool for identifying influences of locality on bioaccumulation of trace elements in Larus dominicanus.
