Persistent organic pollutants and β-cell toxicity: a comprehensive review

Myriam P. Hoyeck et al.

Summary: Persistent organic pollutants (POPs) are widely dispersed contaminants that can affect human health. Epidemiological studies have shown that POPs have a modest impact on diabetes risk. This review evaluates and summarizes the evidence for POPs causing beta-cell toxicity, emphasizing the need to consider the endocrine pancreas in toxicity assessments and highlighting future research directions and limitations.

Role of epigenetic transgenerational inheritance in generational toxicology

Eric E. Nilsson et al.

Summary: Environmental toxicants have been linked to increased disease susceptibility across generations, with epigenetic factors playing a key role in this process. Exposure to toxicants must lead to epigenetic changes in germ cells in order for toxicant-induced epigenetic transgenerational inheritance to occur.

Metabolic syndrome and pesticides: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Hugo Lamat et al.

Summary: The study found that there is a relationship between pesticide exposure and metabolic syndrome. Exposure to pesticides and their contaminants increases the risk of metabolic syndrome, especially for organochlorines. The use of pesticides worldwide may be increasing over time. There is also an inverse relationship between body mass index and male gender.

Epigenetic Modifications Associated with Exposure to Endocrine Disrupting Chemicals in Patients with Gestational Diabetes Mellitus

Mateusz Kunysz et al.

Summary: This article summarizes the data on epigenetic changes in pregnant women with gestational diabetes in relation to endocrine disrupting chemicals, emphasizing the potential impact of environmental exposure on the development of GDM. There is a suggestion that epigenetic marks could potentially serve as a useful tool for diagnostic, prognostic, and therapeutic purposes.

Epigenetic Alterations Related to Gestational Diabetes Mellitus

Jorge Valencia-Ortega et al.

Summary: Gestational diabetes mellitus is the most common metabolic complication in pregnancy, involving various factors in its pathophysiology. Studies have observed that alterations in DNA methylation patterns and certain microRNA levels are related to the disease characteristics, highlighting the need for further research in this area.

Reduced insulin sensitivity and increased j3/a cell mass is associated with reduced hepatic insulin-degrading enzyme activity in pregnant rats

Ana P. D. Taschetto et al.

Summary: The study showed that insulin sensitivity and clearance increase in early pregnancy but decrease in late pregnancy, possibly due to reduced hepatic insulin-degrading enzyme (IDE) activity and increased pancreatic beta-cell mass. This physiological process may be important in understanding gestational diabetes mellitus caused by inadequate insulin supply during pregnancy.
