Molecular interactions of polyvinyl chloride microplastics and beta-blockers (Diltiazem and Bisoprolol) and their effects on marine meiofauna: Combined in vivo and modeling study

Mohamed Allouche et al.

Summary: This study investigated the ecotoxicological effects of beta-blockers (Diltiazem and Bisoprolol) and their interactions with microplastic polyvinyl chloride on marine meiofauna. The results showed that high concentrations of the blockers and plastic had negative impacts on the abundance and reproductive status of the benthic communities.

Effects of the antidepressant paroxetine on migratory behaviour of meiobenthic nematodes: Computational and open experimental microcosm approach

Sahar Ishak et al.

Summary: An open experimental setup was used to investigate the toxic effects of the antidepressant paroxetine on meiobenthic nematodes. The results showed that the contaminated compartments had significantly decreased nematode indices and taxonomic dissimilarities compared to the uncontaminated compartments. Computational analysis revealed that paroxetine bound to specific proteins, providing a satisfactory explanation for the experimental results.

The exposure to polyvinyl chloride microplastics and chrysene induces multiple changes in the structure and functionality of marine meiobenthic communities

Amor Hedfi et al.

Summary: The effects of microplastics and sorbed polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons on benthic communities were evaluated in a laboratory experiment. The study found that the presence of these compounds resulted in a decrease in the abundance of benthic organisms, particularly nematodes. The compounds also caused changes in the composition and functional traits of the nematode communities.

Meiobenthic nematode Oncholaimus campylocercoides as a model in laboratory studies: selection, culture, and fluorescence microscopy after exposure to phenanthrene and chrysene

Mohamed Allouche et al.

Summary: This study focused on the uptake of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) by Oncholaimus campylocercoides, a species of nematode, after exposure to phenanthrene and chrysene. Fluorescence microscopy revealed higher intensities of PAHs at the spicules, mouths, and pharynges of the nematode, with a significant correlation found between buccal fluorescence and the biosubstrate made from shells of Mytilus galloprovincialis.

Nematode traits after separate and simultaneous exposure to Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (anthracene, pyrene and benzo[a] pyrene) in closed and open microcosms

Amor Hedfi et al.

Summary: The majority of experimental studies on the effects of pollutants on meiofauna have been conducted in closed systems, with the current study revealing that single PAHs impact meiobenthic nematodes similarly in closed or open systems, with higher toxicity observed for benzo[a]pyrene. Closed systems contaminated with PAHs became organically enriched, resulting in changes in the types and numbers of deposit feeders. The responses of taxa to hydrocarbons in open systems were influenced by caudal morphology, with the effects of PAHs mixtures being both additive and synergistic. Based on this study, open systems are preferred over closed systems for more accurate research outcomes.

Antioxidant and Anti-Inflammatory Effects of Zingiber officinale roscoe and Allium subhirsutum: In Silico, Biochemical and Histological Study

Nourhene Zammel et al.

Summary: The study examined the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects of ginger and wild leek aqueous extracts in a carrageenan-induced acute inflammation model, along with measurements of inflammatory markers and oxidative stress variables. In silico molecular docking simulation revealed high affinities between the main components of ginger and wild leek with toll-like receptor 6 (TLR6). Histological examinations of paw edema showed that both extracts alleviated inflammation and oxidative stress, demonstrating anti-edematous, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory activities. The results support the potential pharmacological use of these spices in managing inflammatory disorders and oxidative damage, with in silico assays effectively explaining the in vivo effects compared to indomethacin.
