In vitro biotransformation of tris(1,3-dichloro-2-propyl) phosphate and triphenyl phosphate by mouse liver microsomes: Kinetics and key CYP isoforms

Mei-Hong Chen et al.

Summary: As a result of the phase-out of polybrominated diphenyl ethers, organophosphate flame retardants (OPFRs) have been widely used as substitutes globally. Recent studies have focused on the absorption, bioaccumulation, metabolism, and internal exposure processes of OPFRs, particularly aryl-OPFRs and Cl-OPFRs. In vitro studies have shown that TDCPP may bio-accumulate more easily in organisms compared to TPhP, with specific CYP450 isoforms identified for their biotransformation. These findings provide new insights into the potential mechanisms of hepatotoxicity induced by OPFRs and the detoxification processes in hepatocytes.

Metabolic transformation of environmentally-relevant brominated flame retardants in Fauna: A review

Tristan A. Smythe et al.

Summary: In the flame retardant industry, there has been a trend of using more highly brominated compounds as replacements for banned and regulated compounds. However, there is a lack of knowledge regarding the metabolism and transformation potential of these new compounds. Current research shows variations in experimental protocols and a lack of information on the fate and metabolic pathways of certain environmentally relevant flame retardants. More studies are needed to understand the bioaccumulation and fate of these compounds in exposed organisms.

Occurrence of microplastics in a pond-river-lake connection water system: How does the aquaculture process affect microplastics in natural water bodies

Xiong Xiong et al.

Summary: Aquaculture activities contribute significantly to the microplastic contamination in water bodies, particularly in mariculture areas and nearby natural water bodies. The study found that aquaculture ponds could increase the microplastic abundances in neighboring natural water bodies. The abundance and characteristics of microplastics varied with seasons and different water bodies.

Potential involvement of the microbiota-gut-brain axis in the neurotoxicity of triphenyl phosphate (TPhP) in the marine medaka (Oryzias melastigma) larvae

Yu Ting Zhang et al.

Summary: This study found that exposure to waterborne TPhP can cause a decrease in locomotor activity in Oryzias melastigma larvae. The research also revealed dysregulation of 1160 genes in the brain and disruptions in the gut microbiota caused by TPhP. Furthermore, certain gut bacteria were found to be positively correlated with the dysregulated brain genes.
