Effects of Biofilms and Particle Physical Properties on the Rising and Settling Velocities of Microplastic Fibers and Sheets

Isabel Jalon-Rojas et al.

Summary: The vertical dynamics of microplastics in the water column are complex and influenced by particle properties and biofilm. Fiber settling velocity is smaller than that of sheets, and sheet settling velocity increases with particle size up to a threshold. Irregular biofilm distributions decrease sheet settling velocity but can increase fiber settling velocity.

Effects of microplastics on greenhouse gas emissions and microbial communities in sediment of freshwater systems

Wenzhu Zhang et al.

Summary: Microplastics have significant effects on greenhouse gas emissions, nutrient cycling, and microbial communities in freshwater sediment systems. Different diameters of microplastics particles can lead to different effects, such as increased carbon dioxide and nitrous oxide emissions for smaller diameter particles, and increased carbon dioxide emissions for larger diameter particles. Microplastics also alter the organic carbon content in sediment and increase the abundance of microorganisms capable of degrading complex organics.

Discrepancy strategies of sediment abundant and rare microbial communities in response to floating microplastic disturbances: Study using a microcosmic experiment

Minghan Zhu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of floating microplastics (FMPs) on sedimentary microbial ecosystems. The results showed that FMPs altered the diversity and composition of sediment microbial communities, causing a decrease in certain organic-degrading, nitrifying, and denitrifying bacteria. Rare species persisted under FMP disturbances, while abundant species were more susceptible to the disturbances. The assembly mechanisms of abundant and rare populations had significantly different responses to FMP interference, with enhanced homogenous selection in abundant populations and decreased deterministic processes in rare populations. FMPs also decreased network complexity, loosened coexistence relationships, and increased negative correlations. Rare species played a significant role in reshaping complex microbial interactions and coexistence networks in response to FMP disturbances.

Distribution and transport of microplastics in groundwater (Shiraz aquifer, southwest Iran)

Atefeh Esfandiari et al.

Summary: This study detected microplastic particles in an alluvial aquifer in a semi-arid region, with an average concentration of 0.48 particles per liter. The dominant polymers were polystyrene, polyethylene, and polyethylene terephthalate. The study suggests that consuming potable groundwater may contribute to microplastic exposure through ingestion.

Microplastics alter nitrous oxide production and pathways through affecting microbiome in estuarine sediments

Cheng Chen et al.

Summary: Both traditional petroleum-based and emerging biodegradable microplastics promote N2O production in sediment, but the pathways vary. Biodegradable polylactic acid (PLA) microplastics have a greater promotion of N2O production compared to petroleum-based polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and polyethylene (PE), with PLA promoting it through nitrifier nitrification and heterotrophic denitrification, PE through nitrifier denitrification and heterotrophic denitrification, and PVC through nitrifier nitrification. Different nitrogen cycling microbes' response to microplastics leads to the differences in N2O increase pathways, with nitrifying bacteria significantly enriched in all microplastic treatments, while part of denitrifying bacteria significantly enriched in treatments containing PLA and PE microplastics.

Microplastic residues in wetland ecosystems: Do they truly threaten the plant-microbe-soil system?

Hongwei Yu et al.

Summary: The study found that microplastics have negative impacts on wetland plant growth performance, soil microbial community structure, and soil chemical properties. The addition of microplastics alters seed germination strategies, reduces plant growth, and affects chlorophyll synthesis. Additionally, microplastics increase the concentration of reactive oxygen species in soil, leading to decreased soil enzyme activity.
