Characterization of antimicrobial resistance genes and virulence factor genes in an Arctic permafrost region revealed by metagenomics

Heesoo Kim et al.

Summary: Studies on bacterial pathogens and their antimicrobial resistance genes (ARGs) and virulence factor genes (VFGs) in permafrost regions have been limited. This study used a metagenomic approach to survey the potential ARGs, VFGs, and pathogenic antibiotic resistant bacteria (PARB) in the Arctic permafrost region. The findings suggest that the Arctic permafrost region may serve as potential reservoirs for ARGs, VFGs, and PARB, posing a new threat to human health.

Profiling the antibiotic resistome in soils between pristine and human-affected sites on the Tibetan Plateau

Hang Wang et al.

Summary: The study highlights the impact of human activities on the soil resistomes in relatively pristine environments, particularly on the enrichment and dissemination of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). It also reveals the role of heavy metals in shaping ARG distributional patterns in Tibetan environments. Despite human impact, the Tibetan Plateau shows a low potential for ARG selection and dissemination.

Maozhen Han et al.

Summary: The study investigated the characteristics and influencing factors of antibiotic resistance genes in urban drinking water sources, proposing an antibiotic resistome risk index (ARRI) to estimate the potential risks of ARGs. The interactions among mobile genetic elements, human bacterial pathogens, and ARGs were considered in determining the spread of ARGs. Overall, the research provides insights into managing similar lakes by analyzing ARG compositions and associated factors.

Distinctive South and East Asian monsoon circulation responses to global warming

Tim Li et al.

Summary: The Asian summer monsoon is a crucial circulation system for the region, and projecting its future changes is of critical importance. The South Asian summer monsoon and the East Asian summer monsoon are two important components within this system. Although climate models predict increased precipitation in both regions, their circulation changes differ significantly. The East Asian monsoon circulation is projected to strengthen, while the South Asian monsoon circulation is expected to weaken.

Effect of Indian monsoon on the glacial airborne bacteria over the Tibetan Plateau

Jing Qi et al.

Summary: This study investigated the influence of the Indian monsoon on the diversity, taxonomic composition, and community structure of airborne bacteria over glaciers in the Tibetan Plateau. The results showed that the Indian monsoon increased the airborne bacterial diversity and influenced the abundance of specific bacterial phyla. Additionally, the Indian monsoon altered the community structure of airborne bacteria and increased the presence of potential pathogens.

Deciphering the mechanisms shaping the plastisphere antibiotic resistome on riverine microplastics

Chenye Xu et al.

Summary: Microplastics in urban rivers can serve as bacterial niches and vectors for the dissemination of antibiotic resistant genes (ARGs), which may increase risks in aquatic systems. This study found that microplastics selectively enriched ARGs resistant to certain antibiotics and facilitated their dispersal through horizontal gene transfer. Microbial communities and mobile genetic elements (MGEs) played significant roles in shaping ARG profiles and dynamics on microplastics.

Air pollution could drive global dissemination of antibiotic resistance genes

Guibing Zhu et al.

Summary: The study found widespread presence of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in fresh snow, and their dissemination may be exacerbated by air pollution. Snowfall effectively spreads ARGs from point sources to the Earth's surface, highlighting the need for better pollution control measures to reduce the global dissemination risk of antibiotic resistance genes.

Bacteriophages as antibiotic resistance genes carriers in agro-food systems

S. Jebri et al.

Summary: Antibiotic resistance genes are a global health concern, exacerbated by misuse of antibiotics and water reuse in regions like the Middle East and North Africa. Bacteriophages may play a significant role in the transmission of ARGs, posing a concern for their involvement in spreading antibiotic resistance among different biomes.

Metagenomic profiles and health risks of pathogens and antibiotic resistance genes in various industrial wastewaters and the associated receiving surface water

Yao Tang et al.

Summary: The aquatic environment may serve as a critical pathway for the transmission of antibiotic resistance to opportunistic human pathogens. Industrial wastewater discharge into rivers poses challenges in understanding the distribution of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and the acquisition of antibiotic resistance by pathogens. The study found that pathogens in river water mainly originate from sewage discharge of slaughterhouses, and identified a strong co-occurrence between key pathogens and ARGs.

Fate of glacier surface snow-originating bacteria in the glacier-fed hydrologic continuums

Keshao Liu et al.

Summary: The study revealed that the contribution of glacier surface snow-originating taxa to downstream bacterial communities decreases along the hydrologic continuum, with some rare snow-originating bacteria thriving and becoming dominant downstream. The dispersal patterns of bacterial communities are largely determined by mass effects and increasingly subjected to local sorting along the glacier-fed hydrologic continuums.

Improved metagenome binning and assembly using deep variational autoencoders

Jakob Nybo Nissen et al.

Summary: Despite recent advances in metagenomic binning, reconstruction of microbial species from metagenomics data remains challenging. Here we develop variational autoencoders for metagenomic binning (VAMB), a program that outperforms existing state-of-the-art binners in reconstructing near-complete genomes on simulated and real data. VAMB is able to separate closely related strains with high accuracy and showcase different geographical distribution patterns of human gut microbiome species.
