Reclaiming independence in spatial-clustering datasets: A series of data-driven spatial weights matrices

Summary: This study proposes a data-driven approach (DDW) to construct a spatial weights matrix (W) based on the spatial patterns identified by the scan statistic. The DDWs take into account both clustering (or discontinuous) and intuitive spatial dependence according to the first law of geography. Results from simulations and case studies show that DDWs outperform the classic W in datasets with clustering spatial dependence, especially in datasets for common diseases. Comparisons with density-based spatial clustering models also demonstrate the advantages of DDWs incorporated into conditional autoregressive (CAR) models.
