Is coastal erosion a source of marine litter pollution? Evidence of coastal dunes being a reservoir of plastics

Umberto Andriolo et al.

Summary: This study reports scientific evidence of marine litter embedded in dune volumes on the North Atlantic Portuguese coast. The researchers found that stranded litter plays a role in the growth and erosion processes of natural beach-dune systems. The study highlights the need for improved monitoring of buried litter on coastal dunes, as erosion processes can uncover and re-expose the litter into the marine environment.

Mesocosm trials reveal the potential toxic risk of degrading bioplastics to marine life

Jakob Quade et al.

Summary: The degradation rate of biodegradable plastics varies in different simulated environments, with home-compostable plastics degrading faster in the marine environment compared to industrial-compostable materials. Additionally, the initial toxicity of biodegradable plastics gradually disappears after exposure, but specimens exposed in littoral habitats exhibit higher toxicity after long-term exposure.

Seasonal and geographic variations of marine litter: A comprehensive study from the island of Cyprus

Demetra L. Orthodoxou et al.

Summary: This study monitored twenty beaches around Cyprus to assess the amount, categories, and distribution of marine litter. The findings showed that the majority of collected litter items were plastics, particularly single-use plastics. Plastic fragments larger than 2.5 cm were abundant, especially on the northern coasts of the island. Cigarette butts were also frequently found on touristic beaches. The study identified significant temporal and spatial variations in the abundance and distribution of marine litter, which were related to waste management practices.

Summary: This study examined the relationship between beach littering, alien invasion, and people's perception by measuring litter and invasive species density and conducting a social survey. The results showed a correlation between litter levels and port presence, as well as a higher awareness among adults compared to students.

Impact of storms and proximity to entry points on marine litter and wrack accumulation along Mediterranean beaches: Management implications

Virginia Menicagli et al.

Summary: Beach litter has a global impact on public health and economic activities, which requires expensive cleaning efforts. Understanding the key mechanisms that contribute to litter accumulation on beaches, such as sea state and proximity to entry points, is crucial for effective management strategies. This study found that autumn/winter storms are important drivers of litter deposition on a managed beach in the Mediterranean Sea. The results also suggest that beaches near major harbors and rivers are more susceptible to litter pollution. The study suggests that litter mitigation and cleaning activities should be based on predictions of major storm events and targeted at coastal regional sectors.

Summary: The main objective of the Marine Strategy Framework Directive was to achieve a Good Environmental Status in European waters by 2020 through 11 descriptors. The first data on beach litter densities along Italian coasts from 2015-2018 revealed regional differences in both litter quantities and composition. The study highlighted the need for harmonised marine litter monitoring methodologies across European Member States for comparable results.

Carpobrotus spp. patches as trap for litter: Evidence from a Mediterranean beach

L. Gallitelli et al.

Summary: The study evaluated Carpobrotus spp. patches as potential litter traps in coastal dune systems, finding a significant difference in the amount of litter trapped between Carpobrotus and control patches, with plastic fragments being the most commonly trapped items. The research also suggests that managing Carpobrotus patches can contribute to solving beach litter issues by acting as a filter for anthropogenic materials, particularly plastics.

Degradation of Film and Rigid Bioplastics During the Thermophilic Phase and the Maturation Phase of Simulated Composting

Federica Ruggero et al.

Summary: This research aims to study the effective degradation of marketable bioplastic products under composting by simulating industrial composting conditions and varying the thickness of bioplastic products. Results showed that the starch-based polymer Mater-Bi (R) (MB) exhibited the highest degradation rate, while polylactic acid (PLA) was most strongly influenced by thickness and thermophilic phase duration.

Plastics and sedimentation foster the spread of a non-native macroalga in seagrass meadows

Virginia Menicagli et al.

Summary: Plastic pollution poses a threat to seagrasses and macroalgae in marine environments, leading to increased vulnerability to sedimentation and reduced plant cover. Urgent actions are required to prevent further plastic entering natural environments and to establish conservation measures tailored to protect seagrass habitats from plastic pollution.

Summary: Mater-Bi(R) NF866 was blended with gum rosin and its pentaerythritol esters to produce compostable films for food packaging or agricultural mulch films. The additives affected the color, optical properties, and oxygen barrier of the films, while also increasing the hydrophobicity of the MB. The study demonstrated the potential of these biobased films in various applications.

Summary: The current technical standards for biodegradable polymers may not ensure their degradation in natural environments, especially in deep-sea ecosystems where plastic pollution is a concern. Therefore, there is an urgent need to revise these standards to consider more environmental parameters and conditions, and ensure global harmonization.

Summary: Sandy beaches are particularly vulnerable to litter pollution, and the study investigated the degradation of different polyesters buried in sand, finding that poly(lactic acid), poly (epsilon-caprolactone), and poly(butylenesuccinate adipate) did not undergo complete degradation in 267 days, while poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) showed clear biological degradation.
