A baseline study of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons distribution, source and ecological risk in Zhanjiang mangrove wetlands, South China

Ying Yan et al.

Summary: In this study, surface sediment samples collected from Gaoqiao mangrove wetland in Zhanjiang, south China were analyzed for 16 priority PAHs. The PAHs were mainly derived from combustion sources, including the incomplete combustion of liquid fossil fuels, grass, wood, and coal. The evaluation results indicate a low comprehensive ecological risk of PAHs in the study area, although occasional adverse biological effects from PAHs in the sediment call for attention and protection strategies in the processes of urbanization and industrialization in south China.

Nitrogen recovery in reclaimed mine soil under different amendment practices in tandem with legume and non-legume revegetation: A review

Sneha Kumari et al.

Summary: Nitrogen supply is a major limiting nutrient in reclamation schemes, and understanding the dynamics of nitrogen in reclaimed mine soil is crucial for successful revegetation. Using legume and non-legume species for revegetation is a sustainable and cost-effective alternative to mineral nitrogen fertilizer, but it cannot fully activate the biological nitrogen cycle in mine soil.

An integrated approach to quantify ecological and human health risks of soil heavy metal contamination around coal mining area

Teklit Zerizghi et al.

Summary: Soil heavy metals pose risks to ecological biodiversity and human health. This study quantified the risks of soil heavy metals on ecological communities and human health around Greenside coal mining in South Africa using network environ analysis. The results showed that the assessed heavy metals exceeded local background content and posed risks to vegetation and soil microorganisms. The risks entered the food web and harmed the whole system. Children faced severe non-cancer effects, and some pollution sources exceeded acceptable limits.

Identifying sources and transport routes of heavy metals in soil with different land uses around a smelting site by GIS based PCA and PMF

Richmond Anaman et al.

Summary: This study successfully identified the sources, transport routes, and apportionment of heavy metals in soil around a smelting site using principal component analysis, positive matrix factorization, and geographic information system mapping. The results showed that the soil was contaminated with various heavy metals, with smelter emissions and soil parent materials being the primary sources. GIS visualization revealed that surface runoff and atmospheric deposition were the main transport routes for the heavy metals, with different land uses receiving varying degrees of contamination.

Soil microbial community assembly model in response to heavy metal pollution

Min Zhang et al.

Summary: This study found that heavy metal pollution significantly affected the diversity and composition of soil microbial communities. As heavy metal concentration increased, microbial community assembly tended to be more deterministic. The effects of heavy metal stress on the assembly process of different microbial groups were distinct.

Haixia Zhang et al.

Summary: Handan city, as a transportation hub in North China, ranks at the bottom in air quality all year round, causing widespread concern about environmental pollution. The study found that heavy metals in wet deposition are mainly influenced by anthropogenic activities, with pollution sources including traffic sources, industrial sources, coal combustion sources, and metal smelting sources.

Amos Kojo Quaye et al.

Summary: This study investigated the geospatial distribution of soil organic carbon (SOC) and soil pH in cocoa farms across 61 districts in Ghana. The results showed a moderate spatial dependence of SOC and pH, with SOC varying more continuously over longer distances compared to pH. Covariates improved the accuracy and homogeneity of predictions for both soil properties.

Yuntao Wang et al.

Summary: This study utilized multivariate statistical analysis, GIS mapping, Pb isotopic ratio analysis, and positive matrix factorization to accurately determine the sources of heavy metals in orchard soil in Karst-regions. The main sources of heavy metals were found to be soil parent materials, fertilizer application, and a mixed source of industrial activity and manure. Uncertainty analysis indicated that heavy metals with lower percentage contributions had higher uncertainty, providing valuable insights for future applications.
