Three families of Asgard archaeal viruses identified in metagenome-assembled genomes

Sofia Medvedeva et al.

Summary: Asgard archaea harbor virus groups that are similar to prokaryotic viruses, but the evolutionary relationship between these viruses and eukaryotes is unclear. The analysis of Asgard archaea genomes from deep-sea sediments revealed three virus groups associated with these microbial eukaryotes. These virus groups are predominantly lytic prokaryotic viruses and play an important role in controlling Asgard archaea populations in deep-sea ecosystems.

Diversity, taxonomy, and evolution of archaeal viruses of the class Caudoviricetes

Ying Liu et al.

Summary: This study presents 37 new genomes of haloarchaeal tailed virus isolates, doubling the current number of sequenced arTVs. Analysis of 63 available complete genomes of arTVs proposes to classify them into 14 new families and 3 orders, revealing ancient divergence of archaeal and bacterial tailed viruses and common strategies of virus-host interactions. The survey of metagenomes using viral hallmark genes suggests a global architecture of the arTV community shaped through recurrent transfers between different biomes.

New insights into the diversity and evolution of the archaeal mobilome from three complete genomes of Saccharolobus shibatae

Sofia Medvedeva et al.

Summary: Saccharolobus shibatae, a hyperthermophilic and acidophilic archaeal species, serves as a host to spindle-shaped virus SSV1 and exhibits rich diversity of integrated mobile genetic elements. Analysis shows a complex network of MGE distributions among Sulfolobales species, involving horizontal spread and host switching over large phylogenetic distances. Additionally, a virus-to-plasmid transition has been characterized in this study.

Lytic archaeal viruses infect abundant primary producers in Earth's crust

Janina Rahlff et al.

Summary: Little is known about viral-host interactions in the continental subsurface. The study reveals infections of abundant C-fixing subsurface archaea by lytic viruses through a combination of metagenomics, fluorescence in situ hybridization, and electron microscopy. The interplay between viral diversification and adapting CRISPR-mediated resistances of Ca. Altiarchaeum may play a crucial role in heterotrophic carbon cycling in these subsurface ecosystems.

Global overview and major challenges of host prediction methods for uncultivated phages

Clement Coclet et al.

Summary: Bacterial communities play critical roles in Earth's biomes, influenced by viruses like bacteriophages. Metagenomics approaches have enabled exploration of phage genomic diversity, but a major challenge is the lack of direct host information. Various methods and experimental assays are being used to validate and refine predictions for uncultivated phages.

A standardized archaeal taxonomy for the Genome Taxonomy Database

Christian Rinke et al.

Summary: The study proposes a standardized archaeal taxonomy derived from a 122-concatenated-protein phylogeny, resolving polyphyletic groups and normalizing ranks. This taxonomy is based on 2,392 archaeal genomes, identifying 16 archaeal phyla and reclassifying major monophyletic units. Rank normalization corrects for up to 30-fold substitution rate variations and addresses incomplete and uneven archaeal classifications through a genome-based approach.
