In utero exposure to near-roadway air pollution and autism spectrum disorder in children

Sarah A. Carter et al.

Summary: In a large birth cohort study, in utero exposure to near-roadway air pollution, especially from non-freeway sources, was found to potentially increase the risk of autism spectrum disorders in children.

Prenatal Exposure to Air Pollution and Autism Spectrum Disorder: Sensitive Windows of Exposure and Sex Differences

Md Mostafijur Rahman et al.

Summary: Studies have shown that air pollution during pregnancy is associated with an increased risk of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in children, with a greater risk for boys. The study found that exposure to fine particulate matter (PM2.5) in the first two trimesters of pregnancy is associated with an increased ASD risk, especially in boys. The role of ozone (O3) exposure on ASD risk warrants further investigation.

Elemental composition of fine and coarse particles across the greater Los Angeles area: Spatial variation and contributing sources

Farzan Oroumiyeh et al.

Summary: The study revealed that elements in particulate matter are influenced by traffic emissions, with significant spatial variations across different locations indicating diverse emission sources. Traffic emissions were found to be the main contributor to PM2.5, while mineral dust was the dominant source of PM2.5-10.

Summary: This study developed US models for estimating source-specific PM2.5 concentrations at a census tract level, providing highly resolved spatial estimates for the years 2001 to 2014. The results can be used for future epidemiological research to address the variability of different particles.

The epidemiological evidence linking exposure to ambient particulate matter with neurodevelopmental disorders: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Li-Zi Lin et al.

Summary: This article systematically reviews and meta-analyzes the associations between ambient particulate matter (PM) and different types of neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs). The findings suggest a potential link between PM2.5 exposure during early-life and an increased risk of autism spectrum disorders (ASD), with the early postnatal period identified as a critical exposure window.

A Review of Road Traffic-Derived Non-Exhaust Particles: Emissions, Physicochemical Characteristics, Health Risks, and Mitigation Measures

Julia C. Fussell et al.

Summary: Implementing regulatory standards has significantly reduced exhaust emissions of particulate matter from road traffic in developed countries. However, unregulated nonexhaust particle emissions from brake and tire wear, road surface, and road dust resuspension exceed exhaust emissions in many jurisdictions. Although the sources of nonexhaust particles are fairly well-known, specific measurements of airborne concentrations are limited, and the toxicology and epidemiology studies do not provide a clear understanding of the associated health risks.

Contribution of tailpipe and non-tailpipe traffic sources to quasi-ultrafine, fine and coarse particulate matter in southern California

Rima Habre et al.

Summary: Exposure to traffic-related air pollution (TRAP) is associated with adverse health effects, with tailpipe and non-tailpipe sources making different contributions to particulate matter (PM) in various size fractions. Non-tailpipe abrasive vehicular emissions (AVE) contribute significantly to ultrafine particulate matter in some southern California communities. This has implications for exposure and policy, as AVE have high metal content and can reach the alveolar region of the lungs and other organs.

Non-exhaust traffic emissions: Sources, characterization, and mitigation measures

Amelia Piscitello et al.

Summary: Non-exhaust emissions (NEE) from road traffic, including particulate matter (PM) emitted from brake, tyre, road pavement and railway wear, as well as resuspension of road dust, account for up to 90% of total traffic-related PM emitted. Current lack of standardized monitoring approaches has hindered the establishment of international regulations to limit NEE, making mitigation and prevention strategies the main focus. While measures like street washing and switching to electric vehicles have shown short-term effectiveness in reducing PM levels, concerns remain regarding their long-term sustainability and the need for further research and improvement in existing technologies and strategies.
