Ethical AI in facial expression analysis: racial bias

Abdallah Hussein Sham et al.

Summary: Facial expression recognition using deep neural networks has become popular, but the datasets lack a balanced distribution of races, leading to potential biases. This study investigated racial bias in state-of-the-art facial expression recognition methods and found that they tend to be biased towards the races included in the training data. The bias increases with performance improvement if the training dataset is imbalanced.

Two-Stage Recognition and beyond for Compound Facial Emotion Recognition

Dorota Kaminska et al.

Summary: Facial emotion recognition is a complex problem due to individual diversity in facial features and cultural differences, especially when dealing with compound emotions. Researchers have developed a database of 31,250 facial images from 115 subjects to address this issue, and organized a competition based on the dataset. The winning approach involves a two-stage recognition method to enhance classification accuracy for symmetrical emotion labels.
