Thermal design of graded architected cellular materials through a CAD-compatible topology optimisation method

Marco Montemurro et al.

Summary: This study introduces a numerical method to predict the effective thermal conductivity of cellular materials with periodic micro-structures obtained through additive manufacturing. Results show that the macroscopic thermal conductivity of ACMs is strongly influenced by relative density and RVE geometry, and a gradient design was achieved through an optimization method.

Two-scale topology optimisation of cellular materials under mixed boundary conditions

Giulia Bertolino et al.

Summary: This work presents a theoretical/numerical framework for optimizing the topology of anisotropic architected cellular materials at different scales, handling non-zero Neumann-Dirichlet boundary conditions and utilizing non-uniform rational basis spline hyper-surfaces. By introducing minimum length scale constraints and investigating sensitivity to boundary conditions and elastic symmetry group, the proposed method effectively tackles the two-scale topology optimization problem.

Stress-based topology optimization through non-uniform rational basis spline hyper-surfaces

T. Roine et al.

Summary: The Huber-Hencky-Von Mises criterion for isotropic materials is integrated into a special density-based algorithm for topology optimization, using NURBS hyper-surfaces and the Solid Isotropic Material with Penalization approach. Local stress behaviors and singularities are efficiently handled through NURBS blending functions and a suitable aggregation function, with a dedicated strategy for updating aggregation function parameters during iterations. The gradient of the criterion is derived in closed form by exploiting NURBS entities' local support property, and a sensitivity analysis of the optimized topology to NURBS hyper-surface integer parameters is conducted. Additionally, manufacturing requirements related to minimum allowable size are integrated into problem formulation, with the effectiveness of the approach demonstrated on 2D and 3D benchmark problems from literature.

A Novel Two-Stage Constant Force Compliant Microgripper

Tingting Ye et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a novel two-stage compliant constant force microgripper, which can adapt to different sizes of microparts and prevent overload damage. By utilizing the negative stiffness effect and connecting in parallel a two-stage negative stiffness module and a positive stiffness module, two-stage constant forces at different positions are obtained.

Werner W. P. J. van de Sande et al.

Summary: This study aims to develop and evaluate a constant force mechanism for cardiac ablation procedures, which can provide a controlled delivery of contact force within a desired and effective range. Through finite element analysis and prototype evaluation, it has been proven that the mechanism can deliver constant contact force and control within a specific range.

Topology Optimization for Design of a 3D-Printed Constant-Force Compliant Finger

Chih-Hsing Liu et al.

Summary: This article introduces a new compliant constant-force mechanism and proposes a new composite objective function for optimizing its design. Experimental results show that the developed constant-force compliant finger can provide a nearly constant output force over a range of input displacements, leading to the design of a three-fingered constant-force compliant gripper for robotic grasping of fragile objects.

Tunable ultralow frequency wave attenuations in one-dimensional quasi-zero-stiffness metamaterial

Jiaxi Zhou et al.

Summary: This study designed a one-dimensional metamaterial for attenuating ultra-low frequency waves, achieving quasi-zero stiffness through optimized configuration with adjustable band gap structure. Results show that band gap can be tuned by changing pre-compression, enabling attenuation of ultra-low frequency waves.
