An X-FEM based framework for 3D fatigue crack growth using a B-spline crack geometry description

Kris Hectors et al.

Summary: This paper presents an X-FEM based iterative framework for numerical simulation of three-dimensional fatigue crack propagation. B-spline curves and surfaces are used to accurately describe the crack geometry, and a new crack front extension method based on the Moller-Trumbore algorithm is introduced. Good agreement between numerical and experimental results validates the effectiveness of the method.

Weight function method and stress intensity factor for two unsymmetric through-thickness and quarter-elliptical corner cracks at circular hole

Bo Zhang et al.

Summary: This article discusses the stress intensity factor calculation problem of two commonly encountered unsymmetric through and corner cracks in aircraft structures. By extending the two-dimensional displacement-based weight function method, accurate weight functions and stress intensity factors are obtained. The weight function is further used in the slice synthesis weight function method to compute stress intensity factors for two unsymmetric quarter-elliptical corner cracks at a circular hole. The solution accuracy is verified by comparing with results obtained using finite element analysis. The slice synthesis weight function method is 500 times faster than the 3D finite element method and provides an accurate and efficient tool for fatigue and fracture analysis.

Fracture analysis of cracked magneto-electro-elastic functionally graded materials using scaled boundary finite element method

Duc Thai Duong Nguyen et al.

Summary: This paper presents a scaled boundary finite element method for analyzing fracture of functionally graded magneto-electro-elastic materials. The use of polygon meshes simplifies the discretization process and eliminates the need for special treatments around a crack tip to calculate intensity factors. The integration of stiffness matrices analytically allows for the representation of generalized intensity factors along the radial direction, enabling direct calculation from the finite element solution.

Two-dimensional weight function of stress intensity factors for corner cracks emanating from a circular hole

Wei Guo et al.

Summary: The weight function method is used to calculate stress intensity factors along the corner crack front emanating from a circular hole, providing a quick and accurate prediction for fatigue crack growth in engineering structures. The derived weight function is validated against numerical results and finite element calculations, showing high accuracy and applicability for various corner crack shapes with wide ranges of parameters. This approach can be extended to estimate stress intensity factors for corner cracks in complex structures under arbitrary stress distribution.
