Failure analysis and countermeasures of a tunnel constructed in loose granular stratum by shallow tunnelling method

Yiwen Qin et al.

Summary: In this study, the failure problems encountered in tunnels constructed by shallow tunneling method in loose granular strata were successfully addressed using a tunnel construction project on the Sichuan-Tibet 318 Highway Line in China as an example. The failure phenomena, characteristics, and modes were systematically analyzed, and corresponding construction countermeasures were proposed. The results showed that the proposed countermeasures had a remarkable effect, providing valuable references for tunnel design, construction, and disaster control in similar areas.

Failure and stability analysis of deep soft rock roadways based on true triaxial geomechanical model tests

Qingwen Zhu et al.

Summary: In this paper, two true triaxial model tests were conducted to investigate the deformation and failure law of deep soft rock roadway excavation and the stability characteristics of the surrounding rock after the support. The deformation and failure sequence during the excavation process of the model roadway is vault-* sidewalls-* arch springing-* roof collapse. Roof stability is of utmost importance. The application of supporting structure increases the surrounding rock stress significantly and reduces roadway deformation.

Calculation of groundwater head distribution with a close barrier during excavation dewatering in confined aquifer

Hai-Min Lyu et al.

Summary: This paper analyzes the mechanism of blocking effects from a close barrier in confined aquifer and proposes a simple equation based on analytical solution to calculate groundwater heads inside and outside of the excavation pit with a waterproof curtain. The distribution of groundwater head is derived under two conditions: pumping with a constant water head and pumping with a constant flow rate. The proposed model is verified by numerical simulation and experimental results, demonstrating its applicability in engineering practice.

Damage evolution characteristics of saw-tooth joint under shear creep condition

Xing Zhang et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the creep characteristics of joints and finds that under shear creep conditions, the shear displacement of joints increases stepwise with time; the long-term shear strength of joints is proportional to normal stress and sawtooth angle; joints under creep conditions not only have lower shear strength but also require less total absorbed energy and dissipative energy.

Damage behaviors, prediction methods and prevention methods of rockburst in 13 deep traffic tunnels in China

Siyue He et al.

Summary: This study analyzed 13 cases to summarize the typical damage behaviors, key prediction methods and prevention methods of rockburst in deep traffic tunnels. The results showed that rockburst mainly occurred within a few hours to half day after blasting, mainly in the crown and side walls of the tunnel cross section; multiple index methods were more reliable than single index methods in predicting rockburst in the design stage; during the construction stage, MS monitoring method and AE method were the main in-situ monitoring methods used, sometimes in conjunction with the TBM method.

Large Deformation Control of Deep Roadways in Fractured Hard Rock Based on Cracking-Restraint Method

Yue-Mao Zhao et al.

Summary: This study analyzes the large deformation mechanism of deep fractured roadways using various techniques and proposes an engineering design and control technology based on a cracking-restraint method. After applying this method to a deep roadway project over 700 meters deep, monitoring results demonstrate that the control strategy effectively restrains cracking, improves rock mass quality index, and reduces surface displacement.

Rui Peng et al.

Summary: This paper investigated the impact of multi-echelon support on the asymmetry structural instability of different lithology kilometre-deep roadways. The study proposed a mechanical coupling-bearing structure and multi-echelon support method to mitigate the instability, and found that the redesigned support system could reduce instability and improve the bearing capacity of the surrounding rock to some extent.

Guowen Xu et al.

Summary: This paper presents a numerical approach to study the damage evolution of secondary tunnel lining under the combined actions of corrosion of the preliminary support and the creep deformation of the surrounding rock. The improved numerical approach contains three main models, with corresponding failure criteria developed and programmed using FLAC3D's FISH language programming. The validity of the models was verified through investigating the mechanical response of the supporting structures.

A variable-order fractional derivative creep constitutive model of salt rock based on the damage effect

Jie Liu et al.

Summary: This study analyzes the instantaneous elastic strain, visco-elastic and visco-plastic strain components from experimental data, introducing a damage coefficient to describe nonlinear strain in the accelerating creep stage. A new variable-order fractional derivative model with damage is proposed, showing that the coefficient of damage plays a more important role than the fractional order in the nonlinear rheological behavior of salt rock. The results of the new model are in better agreement with experimental data than those of other rheological models, providing a more precise description of the full stages of creep.
