How does industrial structure adjustment reduce CO2 emissions? Spatial and mediation effects analysis for China

Jun Zhao et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of industrial structure adjustment on carbon emissions in China and explores the mediating role of energy efficiency in this relationship. The findings suggest that industrial structure upgrading can reduce CO2 emissions, while industrial structure optimization may increase carbon emissions.

The sources of regulated productivity in Chinese power plants: An estimation of the restricted cost function combined with DEA approach

Minzhe Du et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a framework to measure the effect of environmental regulation on Chinese power plants, by constructing a regulatory stringency index and estimating the impact of environmental regulation on production performance. The study finds a U-shaped effect of environmental regulation on productivity growth, driven mainly by technological progress.

Technology progress bias, industrial structure adjustment, and regional industrial economic growth motivation -- Research on regional industrial transformation and upgrading based on the effect of learning by doing

Weiwei Zhu et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that during the 12th Five-Year Plan, both learning by doing and independent innovation play important roles in technological progress, but the heterogeneity of industrial structure in different regions will result in varying impacts, with the northeast region being most sensitive to the effect of learning by doing.

Optimal structure adjustment strategy, emission reduction potential and utilization efficiency of fossil energies in China

Yingwen Chen et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the optimal structure adjustment strategy, emission reduction potential, and utilization efficiency of fossil energies (coal, petroleum, and natural gas) for 30 provinces in China from 2010 to 2019. Results show that more than half of the provinces have the potential to reduce coal consumption, while the optimal adjustment for petroleum and natural gas varies among provinces. The CO2 emission reduction brought about by energy structure adjustment accounts for about 11% of the total emission, with central and western regions showing significantly larger reduction potential compared to the eastern region.

Unveiling the driving factors of carbon emissions from industrial resource allocation in China: A spatial econometric perspective

Bin Wang et al.

Summary: The study shows that there are differences in industrial resource allocation efficiency among provinces, and factors affecting carbon emissions are not the same. Improving industrial resource allocation can reduce carbon emissions nationwide, but the effects vary by region.

Economic effects analysis of environmental regulation policy in the process of industrial structure upgrading: Evidence from Chinese provincial panel data

Xiao Yu et al.

Summary: As the Chinese economy transitions from rapid growth to high-quality development, the government is focusing on strengthening environmental regulations to optimize industrial economic structures. The economic effectiveness of environmental regulation policies varies among regions, with the eastern region showing better results than the central and western regions. In order to promote industrial structure upgrading and high-quality development, it is important to enrich environmental regulation policy tools, implement precise regulation, and support reforms in key areas and livelihoods.

The effect of industrial structure adjustment on China's energy intensity: Evidence from linear and nonlinear analysis

Bingjiang Luan et al.

Summary: This study finds that industrial structure adjustment is an effective measure to reduce energy intensity in China. Linear analysis shows that an increase in the proportion of the tertiary industry and industrial structure optimization are associated with a decline in energy intensity. Nonlinear analysis indicates that changes in industrial structure optimization affect the relationships among industrial structure adjustment, technological progress, and energy intensity.

Can energy quota trading reduce carbon intensity in China? A study using a DEA and decomposition approach

Xiaoxiao Chu et al.

Summary: The empirical analysis found that the industrial sectors have excessive energy consumption, while primary and service sectors need further energy input, with vast economic potential in China's western provinces and service sectors. The optimal energy intensity effect generated by the trading policy is the largest impetus of carbon intensity reduction in China, but the obstacles to carbon intensity reduction vary by region. EQT has the potential to drive a significant decline in carbon intensity in China, with a simulated average annual decline of approximately 4.09% from 2005 to 2016.
