Mechanistic understanding of cellulose β-1,4-glycosidic cleavage via photocatalysis

Summary: This study demonstrates a hierarchically three-dimensionally ordered macroporous (3DOM) TiO2-Au-CdS Z-scheme heterojunction photocatalyst for the photocatalytic cleavage of cellulose beta-1,4-glycosidic linkage. Inspired by oxidative enzymes in nature, the all-solid-state Z-scheme photocatalyst shows oxygen insertion followed by elimination reaction, leading to the oxidatively cleavage of the beta-1,4-glycosidic bond and generation of gluconic acid and glucose. This research provides insights into a new mechanism for biomass conversion and offers potential for the design of efficient biomass photocatalysts.

Synthesis of Bi2MoO6 and Activating Peroxymonosulfate to Enhance Photocatalytic Activity under Visible Light Irradiation

Summary: Bi2MoO6 nanoflakes were synthesized via a normal hydrothermal method, showing lower photocatalytic activity for the degradation of methylene blue under visible light. However, when used to activate peroxymonosulfate, Bi2MoO6 nanoflakes exhibited excellent degradation efficiency for methylene blue under visible light in the Bi2MoO6/Vis/peroxymonosulfate (PMS) system. The mechanism of activating peroxymonosulfate was proved by radical quenching experiment, revealing the governing role of sulfate radicals in the removal of methylene blue.
