Coupling particle scale model and SuperDEM-CFD for multiscale simulation of biomass pyrolysis in a packed bed pyrolyzer

Xi Gao et al.

Summary: Efficient biomass pyrolysis process requires a comprehensive understanding of the chemical and physical phenomena across multiple length and time scales. In this study, a multiscale computational approach integrating pyrolysis kinetics, particle scale model, and SuperDEM-CFD was developed and validated for biomass pyrolysis in a packed-bed reactor. The validation of a one-dimensional particle-scale model and SuperDEM-CFD model demonstrated accurate prediction and simulation of intraparticle and particulate interactions during biomass pyrolysis.

Modeling and Simulation of the Motion and Gasification Behaviors of Superellipsoidal Biomass Particles in an Entrained-Flow Reactor

Runhui Zhang et al.

Summary: The study adopts a superellipsoidal model to describe nonspherical biomass particles and considers key processes such as drag, lift, torque, particle dynamics, heat/mass transfer, and chemical reactions during biomass gasification. Results show that prolate particles are more scattered, small-volume and prolate particles have higher heating rate and carbon conversion, shape factor and initial velocity have minor effects on gasification, and considering particle shrinkage predicts a lower conversion rate.

Liqiang Lu et al.

Summary: This research utilized a glued-sphere computational fluid dynamic discrete element method to investigate the effects of biomass particle shapes and sizes on pyrolysis. The study revealed significant influences of surface areas and mass distributions on interphase heat transfer and chemical reactions, with neglectable intra-particle heat transfer for certain conditions. Different reactor types were simulated to analyze conversion distributions, showing the best balance between uniform and fast conversion in the fluidized bed.
