Pyrolysis of food waste and food waste solid digestate: A comparative investigation

Juan Zhao et al.

Summary: The effects of anaerobic digestion (AD) on pyrolysis were explained by comparing the pyrolysis performance of food waste (FW) and food waste solid digestate (FWSD). The pyrolysis mechanisms of FW and FWSD were revealed through experimental and kinetic analysis, and the properties and potential applications of pyrolytic products from FW and FWSD were discussed. The results showed that AD consumed part of the organic matters in FW, resulting in changes in the pyrolysis performance of FWSD. The pyrolytic gas from FW had better quality, while the pyrolytic oil and biochar derived from FWSD showed better qualities for oil fuel and carbon-based absorbent. Pyrolysis of FWSD produced less nitrogen-containing pollutants, indicating that AD coupled with pyrolysis is a more environmentally-friendly method to treat FW. This study provides a potential approach and theoretical guidance for the treatment and resource utilization of FW and FWSD.

Towards green whiskey production: Anaerobic digestion of distillery by-products and the effects of pretreatment

Xihui Kang et al.

Summary: Utilizing renewable biogas from whiskey by-products can reduce carbon emissions in the distillery process. Acid pretreatment was found to shorten digestion time for cake maize but had no significant effect on the methane yield from draff and wet distillers' grains with solubles (WDGS). The microbial community analysis revealed that methane production mainly occurred through the hydrogenotrophic methanogenesis pathway. The methane produced from mixed unprocessed by-products accounted for 60.6% of the thermal energy consumed in whiskey production, resulting in the same percentage of CO2 emissions reduction.

Co-digesting sugarcane vinasse and distilled glycerol to enhance bioenergy generation in biofuel-producing plants

Andre do Vale Borges et al.

Summary: This study investigates methane production from the co-digestion of sugarcane vinasse and distilled glycerol, finding that the highest methane yield is achieved at a 1:1 COD-based proportion. The addition of 30% and 50% glycerol increases methane production by 39% and 26% respectively compared to vinasse mono-digestion. On a biorefinery scale, the global energy potential for VGC is estimated to be 22% higher than VM, and extending VGC into the off-season could potentially double VM's bioenergy potential.
