CO2 plume and pressure monitoring through pressure sensors above the caprock

Xiaojin Zheng et al.

Summary: Commercial-scale development of CO2 geological storage requires robust monitoring methods to track the injected CO2 plume and ensure storage. Pressure monitoring above the injection zone can detect potential CO2 leaks. This study presents a model to predict pressure changes in the caprock due to hydraulic communication and partially undrained loading. The results show that pressure changes in the caprock are closely related to the advancement of the CO2 plume. This research demonstrates the feasibility of pressure monitoring to track CO2 plumes and emphasizes the need for high precision pressure measurements for correct interpretation.

CO2-brine-rock interactions altering the mineralogical, physical, and mechanical properties of carbonate-rich shale oil reservoirs

Sihai Li et al.

Summary: The introduction of CO2 in deep formations has complex effects on geochemical/geophysical processes, CO2 geological storage, and oil/gas recovery. Previous studies have focused on long-term geochemical reactions in low carbonate content reservoirs, neglecting the short-term CO2-brine-rock interaction in carbonate-rich formations. This study quantifies the properties of carbonate-rich shale reservoirs after CO2 fracturing and reveals the alteration mechanisms through soaking experiments and multi-scale tests.

Summary: Hydraulic fracturing has been the primary method for extracting unconventional shale gas, but using CO2 for shale gas exploitation is considered a better alternative. The impact of SC-CO2 on shale gas reservoirs varies during different stages of exploration, including drilling, fracturing, and injection.

Damage of reservoir rock induced by CO2 injection

Jing Li et al.

Summary: The study investigates the reservoir rock damage induced by CO2 injection and its impact on oil and gas recovery. The results show that tensile damage and shear damage are concentrated in different directions, with tensile damage being the main mode of damage. Higher CO2 injection rate and pressure inhibit the development of damaged areas near the wellbore. CO2 injection aggravates tensile damage but inhibits shear damage, leading to a transition from shear damage to tensile damage. Compared to nitrogen and water injection, CO2 injection is more effective in creating rock damage.

Fractal Analysis of Tight Sandstone Petrophysical Properties in Unconventional Oil Reservoirs with NMR and Rate-Controlled Porosimetry

Fuyong Wang et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the fractal characteristics of pore spaces in tight sandstones from the Ordos Basin in China, using NMR and RCP techniques. It showed that the fractal dimensions of pore spaces with movable fluids were negatively correlated with permeability and reservoir quality index, with fractal dimensions approaching 3 indicating less favorable petrophysical properties. Different fractal models were compared for calculating fractal dimensions, with the 3D capillary model found to be the most accurate for evaluating tight sandstone properties.

Tectonic evolution and controls on natural gas generation and accumulation in the Ordovician system of the Ordos Basin, North China

Peng Yang et al.

Summary: The Ordovician strata in the Ordos Basin contain high organic matter content and have reached the dry gas stage of thermal evolution, facilitating natural gas generation. Karst type residuums have formed in the central and northeastern parts of the basin, and an Early Cretaceous tectono-thermal event controlled the generation and accumulation of natural gas.
