Engineering a superinsulating wall with a beneficial thermal nonuniformity factor to improve building energy efficiency

Huijun Wu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the nonuniform distribution of thermal resistance and capacitance in exterior walls built with superthermal aerogel insulating panels. By using a thermal nonuniformity factor, the researchers explore how to engineer the wall to improve energy efficiency. The results show that walls with a high nonuniformity factor can greatly decrease wall heat flux.

Cross-disciplinary learning index: A quantitative measure of cross-disciplinary learning about energy

Todd Haskell et al.

Summary: Many science programs assume that students can integrate ideas from multiple disciplines, but assessment tools often focus on learning in a single discipline. This study developed and validated an instrument to measure how well students can combine energy ideas from different disciplines. The instrument consists of online multiple-choice assessments and a calculated metric, the cross disciplinary learning index (CDLI). The CDLI showed satisfactory psychometric properties and correlated with factors like science coursework. The CDLI could be a useful component for program-level assessment in STEM majors.
