Process control strategies for solar-powered carbon capture under transient solar conditions

Dia Milani et al.

Summary: This paper presents process control strategies for effectively regenerating the rich solvent and replacing the conventional desorption unit in the PCC using a novel solar stripper network. The effect of solar heat flux is analyzed and categorized by an active control strategy in synergy with absorber operation. Lean loading control strategy provides the most consistent operation and desirable thermodynamic regime, absorbing a larger range of solar heat flux without violating solvent temperature and pressure-drop constraints.

One-step synthesis of structurally improved, Al2O3-supported K2CO3 pellets via graphite-casting method for low-temperature CO2 capture

Pengxin Zeng et al.

Summary: In this study, graphite-casted, Al2O3-supported, K2CO3-based pellets were prepared for CO2 adsorption. The CO2 adsorption capacity of the pellets was significantly improved by calcination at 900 degrees C and the addition of microcrystalline cellulose. However, excessive addition of microcrystalline cellulose resulted in poor adsorption performance. Additionally, the improved CO2 adsorbents exhibited desirable mechanical property.

Feasibility of solar-assisted CO2 capture power plant with flexible operation: A case study in China

Junyao Wang et al.

Summary: Integrating solar energy to assist solvent regeneration in post-combustion carbon capture has the potential to compensate for the efficiency penalty in power plants. Flexible operation of solar-assisted carbon capture plants can significantly increase profits and reduce CO2 emissions, depending on factors such as electricity tariffs and carbon market regulations.

Continuous CO2 capture performance of K2CO3/Al2O3 sorbents in a novel two-stage integrated bubbling-transport fluidized reactor

Jiliang Ma et al.

Summary: A novel two-stage integrated bubbling-transport bed reactor was proposed for post-combustion CO2 capture using K2CO3/Al2O3 sorbents. The optimal adsorption temperature range was found to be between 60 degrees C and 100 degrees C, with wider range than traditional reactors. CO2 capture efficiency increased with sorbent circulation rate and desorption temperature, while better performance was observed with air desorption gas. Water vapor step-feeding enhanced maximum CO2 capture efficiency from 87% to 96% and showed strong anti-interference ability.

Performance assessment of new energy-saving schemes for combined heat and power plants

Ying Wu et al.

Summary: The new energy-saving scheme for combined heat and power (CHP) retrofitting in coal-fired power plants combines high back-pressure (HBP), absorption heat pump (AHP) and absorption heat exchanger (AHE) to reduce exergy losses and waste heat, resulting in increased power output and efficiency. By effectively applying this scheme in dual unit systems, additional power loss due to off-design conditions can be reduced or eliminated, leading to overall performance improvement. Thermodynamic, exergy, and techno-economic analyses show a 3.55% increase in power efficiency with a dynamic payback period of 1.59 years and a net present value increase of 48,805 thousand USD over a 25-year lifespan.

Unraveling the disparity of CO2 sorption on alkali carbonates under high humidity

Tianyi Cai et al.

Summary: This study investigates the different CO2 sorption performance of Na2CO3 and K2CO3, finding that K2CO3 has stronger H2O affinity and easier deliquescence due to the larger radius of K+. By adjusting the hydrophilicity of Na2CO3, its performance can be improved.
