Combustion kinetics of hydrochar from cow-manure digestate via thermogravimetric analysis and peak deconvolution

Vittoria Benedetti et al.

Summary: This study applied hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) to anaerobic digestate from cow manure, converting it into hydrochar (HC) with different characteristics at varying temperatures. The results showed that increasing HTC temperatures led to higher fixed carbon content, ash content, and calorific value of the HC, while reducing the hydrogen and oxygen content. The study also identified five major components in the HC and analyzed their combustion kinetics.

Hydrothermal carbonization of rape straw: Effect of reaction parameters on hydrochar and migration of AAEMs

Chen Cheng et al.

Summary: Hydrothermal carbonization improves the biomass quality and energy yield of rape straw. The properties of hydrochars produced at different temperatures and residence times were investigated. The results showed that increasing temperature had a more significant effect on hydrochar properties than residence time. The hydrochar structure was changed and became more stable after the aromatization reaction. The gasification reactivity of hydrochar was also affected, with the peak of pyrolysis and gasification shifting to a higher temperature region. Furthermore, hydrothermal carbonization efficiently reduced the content of alkali and alkaline earth metals, with the best removal condition observed at 200°C.

Combustion performance of fine screenings from municipal solid waste: Thermo-kinetic investigation and deep learning modeling via TG-FTIR

Lu Tian et al.

Summary: This study explored the combustion behavior, kinetics, thermodynamics and gas products of fine screenings from municipal solid waste in an air atmosphere. A deep learning model using the 1D-CNN-LSTM algorithm was established to predict the thermogravimetric data of combustion, with visualization technology applied to display the weights and biases. The study revealed the stages of combustion and the changes in activation energy at different stages. The highest enthalpy and free Gibbs energy were observed in stage IV, while the highest changes in entropy occurred in stage II. Gas products and functional groups were also detected. The 1D-CNN-LSTM model achieved excellent prediction performance with optimal settings.

Hydrothermal carbonization of the waste straw: A study of the biomass transient heating behavior and solid products combustion kinetics

S. Sobek et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of HTC on the properties of waste straw fuel and the combustion kinetics of waste straw hydrochars. The results show that temperature has a greater influence on the yields of hydrochars than residence time, with different decomposition patterns observed at different temperatures. The study of the transient HTC period determines the exothermal activity of the waste straw with a heat release of 254.9 kJ/kg. The lower heating values of the hydrochars increase with higher HTC temperatures. The combustion kinetics of the hydrochars are modeled using Fraser-Suzuki deconvolution and nth-order Arrhenius equation fitting, with high R2 values.

A comprehensive emission inventory of hazardous air pollutants from municipal solid waste incineration in China

Zhiqiang Fu et al.

Summary: The release of hazardous air pollutants (HAPs) from municipal solid waste incineration (MSWI) plants in China has raised concerns. This study established a comprehensive emission inventory of HAPs from MSWI plants in China from 2006 to 2017. The results showed that HAPs emissions initially increased and then stabilized due to the implementation of stricter emission standards. The emissions were concentrated in developed coastal provinces and cities. Continuous improvement in pollution control devices and MSWI management is crucial to minimize the harmful impacts of HAPs.

Catalytic pyrolysis of biomass with thermal treatment products of spent lithium-ion batteries for the upgrading of bio-oil and syngas

Xianqing Zhu et al.

Summary: Thermal treatment of spent lithium-ion batteries can produce valuable metals with catalytic activity, which can be used as cheap catalysts for biomass pyrolysis. The study found that PyNCM and PyLCO have good catalytic activity for promoting the devolatilization process of wheat straw and enhancing the cracking of bio-oil to produce more gaseous products (syngas). Additionally, both PyNCM and PyLCO increased the content and yield of H2 in the syngas, with PyNCM showing a more distinct catalytic effect on wheat straw pyrolysis.
