Sewage sludge and wood sawdust co-firing: Gaseous emissions and particulate matter size distribution

Patrik Elbl et al.

Summary: This study examines the feasibility of co-firing dried sewage sludge and wood sawdust, and finds that increasing the sludge content leads to higher NOx and SO2 emissions, while CO emissions decrease significantly. Additionally, the addition of sludge also affects the mass and distribution of particulate matter.

Combustion Characteristics, Kinetics, and Thermodynamics of Pine Wood Through Thermogravimetric Analysis

Xiaokang Xu et al.

Summary: The study characterized the combustion process of pine wood in air, revealing it can be divided into two stages with the first stage considered as a one-step reaction. Pine wood decomposed easier in air than in nitrogen, and the kinetic modeling showed good agreement between predicted and experimental curves.

Municipal Solid Waste Mass Balance as a Tool for Calculation of the Possibility of Implementing the Circular Economy Concept

Grzegorz Wielgosinski et al.

Summary: The municipal waste management system in Poland faces challenges in achieving the general target level of 65% recycling by 2025/30, even if assumed recycling levels of individual waste streams are achieved. To reach higher levels of recycling, selective ash collection from individual home furnaces is necessary, while reducing the amount of plastics or introducing a deposit on packaging has minimal impact. Additionally, Poland needs at least 3.5 million Mg/year of incineration processing capacity to complete the waste management system.

Insight into the Composition of the Stabilized Residual from a Full-Scale Mechanical-Biological Treatment (MBT) Plant in Terms of the Potential Recycling and Recovery of Its Contaminants

Katarzyna Bernat et al.

Summary: The study investigated the composition and particle size distribution of <80 mm fraction mechanically separated from residual municipal solid waste and stabilized residual after aerobic stabilization. It was found that the share of biodegradable waste decreased in the stabilized residual compared to the <80 mm fraction, with smaller particle size fractions predominating in the stabilized residual. The main contaminants in the stabilized residual were plastic, glass, metal, and other waste materials.
