Current status of the thermohydraulic behavior of supercritical refrigerants: A review

J. Van Nieuwenhuyse et al.

Summary: Supercritical heat transfer has been widely applied, but the research on refrigerants is scarce. This paper provides an overview of existing research on supercritical heat transfer, summarizing the applications and findings for water and other fluids. Accurate prediction of heat transfer and pressure drop requires considering the sharp variations in thermophysical properties. The remaining gaps in literature include larger diameter tubes, horizontal flow, cooling heat transfer, and pressure drop estimations for refrigerants.

Thermal oxidation deposition characteristics of RP-3 kerosene in serpentine tubes under supercritical pressure

Zhixiong Han et al.

Summary: This study compared the deposition and heat transfer behaviors in straight tube and serpentine tubes, and analyzed the deposition characteristics in 4-Bend serpentine tubes at different conditions. The results showed that the application of serpentine tubes effectively inhibited deposition and enhanced heat transfer. The deposition amount was significantly lower in serpentine tubes compared to straight tubes, and the deposition rate peaked at the bending section. Fuel temperature, mass flow rate, and system pressure all influenced the deposition distribution and morphology.

Thermal cracking and coke deposition characteristics of aviation kerosene RP-3 in an S-bend tube

Renting Wang et al.

Summary: This study experimentally demonstrated that the conversion and gas yield in an S-bend tube were slightly higher than those in a straight tube. The maximum conversion in the S-bend tube reached 70.1% at 700 degrees C. This was attributed to the presence of high-temperature fuel near the wall, which was pushed towards the core flow field by secondary flow and Dean vortices. Additionally, a significant peak in the coke deposition rate was observed in the first curved region of the S-bend tube. Furthermore, a decreased mass flow rate promoted thermal cracking and coke deposition due to the high fuel bulk temperature and coke precursor concentration.

Numerical investigation on deteriorated heat transfer of supercritical water flowing upward in tubes with variable cross-sectional geometries

Kwun Ting Lau et al.

Summary: This study numerically investigates the effect of tubes with variable cross-sectional geometries on the deteriorated heat transfer of upward flow supercritical water. It is found that converging channels can suppress and delay the heat transfer deterioration, while diverging channels have the opposite effect. Periodic geometries, with alternating convergent and divergent sections, can alleviate the heat transfer deterioration with minimal pressure drop.

Experimental and numerical study on the heat transfer characteristic of supercritical water with high mass velocity in a helically coiled tube

Fucheng Chang et al.

Summary: The study found that under high mass velocity conditions, there is a significant temperature difference between the inner and outer walls of the helical coil, with the difference reaching an extremum near the critical temperature. Increasing the mass velocity reduces wall temperature inhomogeneity, while increasing heat flux density leads to an increase in wall temperature inhomogeneity.

Summary: The convective heat transfer characteristics of sCO(2) in a horizontal U-tube are numerically investigated in this work. The reliability of four turbulence models is verified. The effects of operation parameters, buoyancy, flow acceleration, and centrifugal force on the heat transfer characteristics are further investigated. The study finds that the position where T-b is close to T-pc has an important influence on the heat transfer, and centrifugal force mainly enhances the heat transfer coefficient in the U-section and the outlet-section.

Investigation of heat transfer Exergy loss number and its application in optimization for the shell and helically coiled tube heat exchanger

Summary: This study investigates the exergy analysis of a shell and helically coiled tube heat exchanger (SHCTHX) using MATLAB software. A dimensionless number called heat transfer exergy loss number (xi HT) is proposed, and its effect on the effectiveness, heat transfer exergy loss, and number of transfer units is examined. The study also explores the optimization of the SHCTHX in terms of design parameters. The findings show that the design parameters have an impact on the performance of the heat exchanger, and the optimization results are influenced by the presence of xi HT.

Numerical study on heat transfer characteristics of supercritical CO2 in a vertical heating serpentine micro-tube

Zhengming Yi et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of mass flux and heat flux on heat transfer in a vertical serpentine micro-tube, as well as the different influences of buoyancy and centrifugal force in the liquid-like and gas-like regions. The results show that the heat transfer coefficient decreases with increasing heat flux and increases with increasing mass flux. The liquid-like region is more affected by buoyancy, resulting in significant differences between upward and downward flow heat transfer coefficients, while the gas-like region is less affected, with smaller differences between the coefficients. At the turning point of the micro-tube, centrifugal force weakens heat transfer, with a larger effect in the liquid-like region. These findings provide important insights into the effects of buoyancy and centrifugal force on flow and heat transfer in different regions.
