An exsitu underground coal gasification experiment with a siderite interlayer: course of the process, production gas, temperatures and energy efficiency

Marian Wiatowski et al.

Summary: The 72-hour ex situ coal gasification test with oxygen as the gasifying agent in wet sand surrounding resulted in the production of gas with a high calorific value, attributed to the reaction of evaporated water with incandescent coal. Water content in the wet sand was found to significantly impact the efficiency of the gasification process.

Characteristics of Water Contaminants from Underground Coal Gasification (UCG) Process-Effect of Coal Properties and Gasification Pressure

Magdalena Pankiewicz-Sperka et al.

Summary: The study focused on qualitative and quantitative characterization of UCG wastewater produced during four different experiments, showing significant relationships between wastewater composition and coal properties as well as gasification pressure, especially for organic pollutants like phenols, BTEX, and PAH's. The concentrations of these pollutants were found to vary depending on the type of coal and gasification pressure, with phenols having the highest concentrations. Additionally, the study found that concentrations of phenols, BTEX, and PAH's decrease with increasing pressure.

Challenges and Opportunities for End-of-Life Coal Mine Sites: Black-to-Green Energy Approach

Aleksander Frejowski et al.

Summary: The paper explores the potential of repurposing active mines for green energy generation after closure. It analyzes 18 mining plants within 12 mines in the Upper Silesian Coal Basin in Poland, discussing criteria for adaptation and possibilities such as geothermal energy production, coalbed methane extraction, and underground coal gasification. Structural analysis using the MICMAC method is performed to identify important criteria for generating energy from underground coal gasification in Polish mine conditions.

Effect of Lignite Properties on Its Suitability for the Implementation of Underground Coal Gasification (UCG) in Selected Deposits

Krzysztof Kapusta

Summary: Two experimental simulations of underground coal gasification processes were conducted using large bulk samples of lignites, and the results showed that the physicochemical properties of the lignite used considerably affect the in situ gasification process. Lignites with lower moisture content and higher energy density demonstrated higher process efficiency compared to lignites with higher moisture content.
