Numerical study and thermal evaluation of a triple glass window under Mexican warm climate conditions

A. Rodriguez-Ake et al.

Summary: The study showed that an air-gap width of 10 mm can reduce the hourly heat flux to the indoor during the warmest day by up to 17.7% and 38.7% compared to DG and SG, respectively. Additionally, the daily total heat flux, electricity cost, and CO2 emission on the TG are approximately 40% lower than an SG. Therefore, TG is recommended to improve the thermal performance of windows under the weather conditions of Merida, Yucatan.

Thermal resistance of framed windows: Experimental study on the influence of frame shading width

Jonathan Dahl Jorgensen et al.

Summary: The experimental study investigates the influence of shading width on the performance of window glass panes exposed to different radiation levels, revealing that shading width affects the time of glass failure at low radiation levels but becomes insignificant at higher radiation levels. Results show that wider shading width leads to a slightly higher temperature gradient at the time of the failure under high radiation levels.

Summary: The study shows that the ZnO/Au/ZnO sample with Au as the intermediate layer has the highest transmittance in the visible region (68.95%) and the highest Figure of Merit (5.1 x 10(-4) omega(-1)). Therefore, it can be considered as relatively the optimal sample for energy-saving building windows due to its low U-value (2.16 W/cm(2) K) and low emissivity (0.45).

The Impact of Building Orientation and Window-to-Wall Ratio on the Performance of Electrochromic Glazing in Hot Arid Climates: A Parametric Assessment

Imene Lahmar et al.

Summary: The construction industry demand has significantly increased, leading to higher energy consumption, especially in areas with severe climate conditions. Designers are using software tools to find optimal solutions in the early stages of design to minimize time and cost losses. Smart technologies like electrochromic (EC) glazing can reduce energy consumption while maintaining comfort conditions. However, careful management is required to avoid adverse effects or poor performance. A parametric simulation using Rhinoceros and Grasshopper was conducted to evaluate the energy-saving benefits of using EC glazing in residential buildings in Biskra, Algeria, considering facade orientation and window-to-wall ratio. The research results showed significant energy savings across all orientations.

Summary: The U-value of windows, controlled by the insulating glass unit (IGU) U-value, is usually expected to improve with a decrease in external temperature, but for modern window IGUs with Low-E coatings, it can increase instead. It is necessary to consider this phenomenon when calculating peak power for heating buildings and consider introducing the concept of design U-value or recalculating rules for windows.
