Extensive investigation of symmetrical and asymmetrical cascaded multilevel inverters for electric vehicle applications

Summary: This paper investigates the optimization of conventional power electronics in electric vehicles using multilevel inverters (MLIs). The focus is on cascaded MLIs and the crucial design parameter of individual MLI modules. The study compares symmetrical and asymmetrical cascaded MLIs and concludes that symmetrical MLIs generally have higher redundancy of voltage levels, while asymmetrical MLIs can achieve an increase in the number of different levels. By using a special design rule, asymmetrical MLIs can achieve the same output voltage resolution as symmetrical MLIs while keeping the number of modules low. However, the asymmetrical nature of the modules may negatively impact the power balance of the inverter. The paper also discusses the total harmonic distortion and finds that configurations with a high number of voltage levels and symmetrical output voltage patterns achieve the lowest distortion.

Summary: Proton Exchange Membrane type Fuel Cells (PEMFC) play a major role in the automotive industry, offering advantages such as reliability, high starting speed, and efficiency. However, the nonlinear V-I and P-I characteristics of PEMFC at different operating temperatures negatively impact system performance. To improve Maximum Power Point (MPP) tracking speed, global optimization methods like Improved Particle Swarm Optimization (IPSO) and Adaptive Cuckoo Search Optimization (ACSO) are utilized. These methods demonstrate easy understanding, effective solving of complex nonlinear problems, and high reliability compared to classical controllers. The main drawback of PEMFC is the low output voltage, which can be addressed with a step-up boost converter.

Optimal sizing and sensitivity analysis of a battery-supercapacitor energy storage system for electric vehicles

Review of fast charging strategies for lithium-ion battery systems and their applicability for battery electric vehicles

Efforts to reduce charging times to 15 minutes, similar to refueling times for conventional vehicles, face challenges such as accelerated battery aging and safety hazards during operation. Various approaches have been explored to develop fast charging strategies for battery management systems, but consensus on the optimal solution remains elusive. This review evaluates over 50 studies on fast charging strategy determination, analyzing them based on parameterization efforts, battery types studied, and real-world applicability, to identify research gaps and enable transfer to electric vehicle applications.
