Feasibility Analysis of a DC Distribution System for a 6 kW Photovoltaic Installation in Ireland

Meshari Alshammari et al.

Summary: Recent developments in micro-grids have sparked interest in DC distribution for its high efficiency in transmitting energy from renewable sources to DC loads. This paper analyzes the performance of AC and DC systems in a 6 kW PV installation, finding that DC distribution can reduce system losses by up to 50% and save 5% grid energy annually compared to AC systems. The study also shows that DC outperforms AC in spring and autumn, but has less impact in summer when PV production exceeds demand. These findings highlight the benefits of future DC distribution systems in both individual buildings and larger-scale micro-grids.

Ultrawide Voltage Gain Range Microconverter for Integration of Silicon and Thin-Film Photovoltaic Modules in DC Microgrids

Andrii Chub et al.

Summary: The article discusses residential and building-integrated photovoltaic module types, highlighting the limitations of current dc-dc converter technologies in building a universal interface microconverter. A new approach utilizing a boost half-bridge front-end inverter and a three-mode reconfigurable rectifier is proposed to address this issue and enable the interfacing of different PV module types.

Energy efficiency of a novel low voltage direct current supply for the future building

Anis Ammous et al.

Summary: The paper explores the energy efficiency performances of a proposed Low Voltage Direct Current supply concept compared to other conventional on-grid photovoltaic chains architectures. The study shows that using direct current loads instead of alternative current loads when photovoltaic power is generated locally is more efficient. The new low voltage direct current architecture has an efficiency that is 10% higher than the conventional one.

Increased photovoltaic utilisation from direct current distribution: Quantification of geographical location impact

Patrik Ollas et al.

Summary: This study models the performance of a DC distribution system in a single-family residential building and compares it with a conventional AC system, showing that the DC system reduces system losses and increases PV utilization, resulting in efficiency gains. The geographical location has some impact on system performance and PV utilization, but grid interaction is crucial for the performance of the DC topology.
