Integrated microalgae culture with food processing waste for wastewater remediation and enhanced biomass productivity

Angela Paul Peter et al.

Summary: Waste generation from food manufacturing facilities poses serious hazards to the environment, including environmental degradation, water pollution, and land pollution. This study investigates the use of food processing waste as an organic carbon source for the growth of Chlorella vulgaris. By combining food processing waste powders with BG-11 medium, the algal growth and biochemical content were improved, with higher biomass concentration and increased lipid, protein, and carbohydrate contents. This research suggests that an integrated culture system using food processing waste can generate energy while improving the bio-composition of microalgae biomass.

Techno-economic and environmental assessment of bioenergy and livestock integrated systems in Brazil

Narie Rinke Dias de Souza et al.

Summary: Bioenergy-livestock integrated systems (BLI) are a promising land-based option to meet future agricultural demands, while reducing land use pressure and greenhouse gas emissions. This study found that BLI systems have higher techno-economic feasibility compared to conventional systems, resulting in reduced payback time and increased net present value. BLI systems also have the potential to significantly reduce GHG emissions and increase output. Additionally, BLI systems outperform conventional systems in certain Sustainable Development Goals, such as Zero Hunger, Clean Water and Sanitation, and Life Below Water. On the other hand, meat production in feedlots has lower impacts on air quality and higher GHG mitigation. These findings are important for guiding the integration of biofuels and livestock sectors in Brazil.

Estimation of Biogas Production and the Emission Savings from Anaerobic Digestion of Fruit-based Agro-industrial Waste and Agricultural crops residues

Sri Suhartini et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the biomethane potential of agricultural crop residues and Fruit-Based Agro-Industrial Wastes, finding that Fruit-Based Agro-Industrial Wastes generally had higher specific methane potential than agricultural crop residues. Theoretical estimations showed a positive energy balance for all wastes tested, with apple peel waste having the highest exportable energy potential. The study concluded that there is good potential to valorise these wastes using anaerobic digestion technology in Indonesia to address waste management and clean energy provision challenges.
