Use of CO2 in Pressurized, Fluidized Bed Gasification of Waste Biomasses

Mateusz Szul et al.

Summary: This research examines the impact of total system pressure and partial pressure of CO2 on the efficiency and quality of conversion in a large-scale gasification installation. The results demonstrate that gasification pressure has a significant influence on the yield of hydrocarbons, with a decrease in overall gas production. However, in the process development unit, no signs of bed agglomeration were observed, contrary to smaller-scale fluidized bed tests.

Supercritical Water Gasification of glycerol: Continuous reactor kinetics and transport phenomena modeling

Gabriel Salierno et al.

Summary: In this study, glycerol was gasified under supercritical water conditions using a continuous tubular reactor. The effects of glycerol concentration and inflow rate on the reaction products were investigated, and the performance of different reactor materials was compared. The results showed that heat transfer had a significant influence on reactivity, and the molar production of H-2, CH4, and CO2 could be accurately predicted. In terms of catalytic effect, Inconel-625 outperformed Stainless Steel 316 with higher productivity of C-2 hydrocarbons and CH4, but at the expense of H-2 yield.

Valorization of lignins from energy crops and agro-industrial byproducts as antioxidant and antibacterial materials

Mariavittoria Verrillo et al.

Summary: The study found that lignosulfonates exhibited the strongest antiradical/antimicrobial capacity, while other substrates were less effective. The observed antioxidant/antibacterial properties were positively correlated with lignin aromatic/phenolic content. The positive correlation between antiradical and antimicrobial activities suggests that lignin scavenging capacity was also involved in its antibacterial activity.

A Review on Lignin-Based Phenolic Resin Adhesive

Xiaoyu Gong et al.

Summary: It is increasingly important to replace petroleum-based chemicals with biomass-based alternatives for the development of a low-carbon economy. The use of biobased lignin as a partial replacement for phenol in phenolic resin adhesives used in the wood panels industry can significantly reduce carbon emissions and negative environmental impact. However, the limitations of lignin's structure and activity hinder its application as an adhesive, and researchers have developed various modification methods to overcome these issues.

Influence of the interaction among three biomass components on gasification characteristics

Haimiao Yu et al.

Summary: This study explored the interaction among the three components of biomass in the gasification process by changing the mass ratio of hemicellulose to lignin. The experimental results showed significant interaction among the components, with different ratios leading to different effects on gas yields and gasification efficiency.

Effects of Oxygen and Steam Equivalence Ratios on Updraft Gasification of Biomass

Nadia Cerone et al.

Summary: Experimental datasets of gasification on various lignocellulosic feedstocks were used to correlate gasifying agents flow with the performance of updraft gasification. The use of steam was found to stabilize the process and adjust the H-2/CO ratio in syngas, leading to improved energy efficiency. Different operational conditions were identified to achieve the desired products effectively.

Production and Application of Lignin-Based Chemicals and Materials in the Cellulosic Ethanol Production: An Overview on Lignin Closed-Loop Biorefinery Approaches

Carlos Eduardo de Araujo Padilha et al.

Summary: Lignocellulosic biomass is a rich resource on Earth, but lignin is often seen as a hindrance to biomass conversion. Recent studies show that lignin can be transformed into useful products for cellulosic ethanol production. These approaches aim to establish closed-loop biorefineries for better economic performance and reduced environmental impact.
