Investigation of the distribution of relaxation times of a porous electrode using a physics-based impedance model

Yulong Zhao et al.

Summary: The analysis of the distribution of relaxation times (DRT) has gained wide attention in battery engineering due to its nondestructive nature and ability to differentiate electrochemical processes. A new theory is developed based on a deep understanding of the physics-based impedance model and the DRT method, providing a closed-form analytical expression for the DRT spectrum with clear physical meaning. It is also found that the relaxation time dispersion of EIS may have multiple origins.

In-operando Raman study of lithium plating on graphite electrodes of lithium ion batteries

M. A. Cabanero et al.

Summary: High spatial resolution in-operando Raman spectroscopy was used to study lithium deposition on graphite electrodes, showing that lithium is deposited and intercalated into graphite simultaneously. After 30 minutes, a second mechanism becomes dominant. The evolution of G and D bands of graphite and the lithium concentration in the electrolyte suggest that EC is slowly consumed after lithium plating begins.

Yuxin Chen et al.

Summary: This study used plan-view operando video microscopy to investigate lithium plating on graphite anodes in high-energy-density batteries. The results show that lithium plating mainly occurs on graphite particles and is correlated with local minimum of graphite electrode potential. Galvanic corrosion currents are responsible for lithium re-intercalation and dead lithium formation.
