Remediation of Cr(VI)-contaminated soil by combined chemical reduction and microbial stabilization: The role of biogas solid residue (BSR)

Ying Gao et al.

Summary: In this study, a combined approach of chemical reduction and microbial stabilization was investigated for the remediation of Cr(VI) contaminated soil. The combination of ferrous sulfate and biogas solid residue effectively converted Cr(VI) into Cr(III), reducing the residual Cr(VI) content to a level well below the screening value for soil contamination. The treatment also eliminated the phytotoxicity of the soil and caused significant changes in the microbial community.

New insight into the mechanism of remediation of chromium containing soil by synergetic disposal of ferrous sulfate and digestate

Rongqiang Li et al.

Summary: In this study, a novel method using ferrous sulfate combined with digestate was used for Cr(VI) reduction. The combination of ferrous sulfate and digestate achieved 100% reduction of Cr(VI) within 10 days. Microorganisms in the digestate played a crucial role in the reduction process. The combined treatment also led to an increase in the relative abundance of certain bacterial taxa, which was significant for Cr(VI) reduction.

Combination of interfacial reduction of hexavalent chromium and trivalent chromium immobilization on tin-functionalized hydroxyapatite materials

Sebastiano Campisi et al.

Summary: An ecofriendly hydroxyapatite material functionalized with tin (Sn/HAP) was presented for efficient interfacial reduction of Cr(VI) to Cr(III). Results showed that Sn/HAP samples prepared using colloidal acid solutions exhibited better performances in reducing Cr(VI) to Cr(III) due to higher tin dispersion on the HAP surface. Additionally, tin was tightly retained on the HAP surface under reaction conditions, confirming the occurrence of Cr(VI) reduction at the solid-liquid interphase.

Summary: The study investigated the efficiency of bog peat-derived humic acid in the reductive removal of hexavalent chromium from aqueous solution, focusing on the impact of solution pH, Fe-III dosage, reaction time, and light irradiation. Regression models were developed and analyzed, showing a strong relationship between experimental and predicted responses. The highest Cr-VI removal efficiencies were achieved under specific optimal conditions in both dark and light-irradiated systems.

Remediation of Cr(VI)-contaminated soil using combined chemical leaching and reduction techniques based on hexavalent chromium speciation

Donghui Wang et al.

Summary: The study found that using oxalic acid and citric acid at 0.02 mol/L, with a liquid-solid ratio of 5:1 and a leaching time of 45 minutes, the removal rate of Cr(VI) was 62.7%, with residual Cr(VI) in soil at 126 mg/kg and a soil pH of 4.09 after leaching. Between 25 and 90 degrees Celsius, with a molar ratio of 25:1 of FeSO4 center dot 7 H2O to Cr(VI), the reduction rate of Cr(VI) in soil ranged from 54.0% to 98.4%, with leaching concentration of Cr(VI) in soil at 0.01-0.29 mg/L. The most cost-effective reduction occurred at 90 degrees Celsius for 60 minutes, resulting in only 2.7 mg/kg of residual Cr(VI) in soil.

Biomanagement of hexavalent chromium: Current trends and promising perspectives

Pooja Singh et al.

Summary: Chromium is a widely used heavy metal in industrial sectors, leading to large volumes of toxic industrial wastewaters being discharged into the environment without proper treatment. Biological approaches have shown great potential for chromium removal, including the use of various agro-based waste for adsorption, microbial groups for reduction/precipitation, and emerging agents like biosurfactants for enhanced metal bioremediation. The safe removal and recovery of chromium from wastes is crucial for achieving social, economic, and environmental sustainability as chromium is a non-renewable resource.

Summary: This study investigated the indirect Cr (VI) bioreduction process using anaerobic sludge produced from kitchen waste with external glucose and sulfate to create a reducing environment. The neutral pH and high release of polysaccharides were found to improve the removal efficiency of Cr (VI). Microorganisms like Desulfovibrio, Sulfurospirillum, and Thermovirga played key roles in dominating the bioreduction process. Additionally, genes like chromate reductase (chrR) and sulfite reductase (dsrA) contributed to the mechanism of external glucose on the bioreduction process.
