Lipid metabolism, immune and apoptosis transcriptomic responses of the hepatopancreas of Chinese mitten crab to the exposure to microcystin-LR

Cheng Chi et al.

Summary: Global warming increases harmful cyanobacterial blooms, and microcystin-LR (MC-LR) is a hepatotoxic agent produced during these blooms. This study injected different doses of MC-LR into the hepatopancreas of Chinese mitten crab and found that it affected gene expression, leading to triglyceride accumulation and changes in sterol metabolism, apoptosis, and actin cytoskeleton regulation.

Hepatotoxic shellfish poisoning: Accumulation of microcystins in Eastern oysters (Crassostrea virginica) and Asian clams (Corbicula fluminea) exposed to wild and cultured populations of the harmful cyanobacteria, Microcystis

Nora R. W. Straquadine et al.

Summary: The Asian clam and eastern oyster may serve as vectors for microcystin in cyanobacterial harmful algae blooms. They differ in clearance rates and accumulation of microcystins, with the Asian clam showing selective feeding and depurating microcystins, while the eastern oyster accumulates more microcystins and is therefore a more likely vector for hepatotoxic shellfish poisoning.

Toxicological Evaluation of Acetylsalicylic Acid in Non-Target Organisms: Chronic Exposure on Mytilus galloprovincialis (Lamarck, 1819)

M. Pagano et al.

Summary: Pharmaceutical contaminants in water pose a real risk to the marine ecosystem and indirectly to humans. This study investigates the effects of chronic exposure to the anti-inflammatory drug ASA on the volume regulation and cell viability of Mytilus galloprovincialis, as well as the histopathological condition of the gills and digestive gland. The results highlight the need for a better understanding of the link between over-the-counter pharmaceuticals and non-target organisms.

Hepatic oxidative stress and neurotoxicity in Pelophylax kl. esculentus frogs: Influence of long-term exposure to a cyanobacterial bloom

Branka R. Gavrilovic et al.

Summary: The study found that cyanobacterial blooms induced oxidative damage and neurotoxic effects in the liver of Pelophylax kl. esculentus frogs, leading to chronic ecotoxicity. Results showed that oxidative damage to proteins and lipids, as well as impaired cholinergic homeostasis, were the main factors affecting the frogs.

Toxicity of gamma aluminium oxide nanoparticles in the Mediterranean mussel (Mytilus galloprovincialis): histopathological alterations and antioxidant responses in the gill and digestive gland

Selin Erturk Gurkan et al.

Summary: The study found that contamination of gamma-Al2O3 NPs negatively affects the aquatic organism. Histopathological indices were significantly higher in all exposure groups compared to the control group in gill and digestive gland. The proportion of atrophic phase tubules was very high in the 20 and 40 mg/L gamma-Al2O3 NPs exposure groups.

Chronic exposure to microcystin-LR increases the risk of prostate cancer and induces malignant transformation of human prostate epithelial cells

Chun Pan et al.

Summary: This study demonstrated that MC-LR can induce a malignant phenotype in human prostate epithelial cells and promote the development of prostate cancer in vivo. MC-LR may serve as a potential tumor promoter in the progression of prostate cancer.

Stress tolerance of two freshwater invaders exposed to Microcystis aeruginosa and microcystin-LR

Anna G. Boegehold et al.

Summary: Research compared the sensitivity of Asian clams and quagga mussels to environmental stressors, finding that quagga mussels exhibited higher physiological responses, consuming more oxygen and filtering at a faster rate compared to Asian clams when exposed to Microcystis aeruginosa. Filtration rates were higher in quagga mussels overall, and oxidative stress responses differed between the two species.

Antioxidant responses and microcystins accumulation in Corbicula fluminea following the control of algal blooms using chitosan-modified clays

Chao Chen et al.

Summary: The study found that the deposition of clay-algae flocs (CAFs) during harmful algal blooms (HABs) control can lead to a reduction in antioxidant enzyme activities in Corbicula fluminea, resulting in oxidative damage to the cells, as well as an accumulation of microcystins (MCs) in sediments and Corbicula fluminea.
