Combined effects of nanosized polystyrene and erythromycin on bacterial growth and resistance mutations in Escherichia coli

Qing Ning et al.

Summary: The study found that nanoplastics have toxic effects on the growth and antibiotic resistance evolution of Escherichia coli, primarily through adsorption onto bacterial surfaces and increasing intracellular ROS or potential mechanical damage, while also increasing bacterial resistance mutations. Amino-modified nano-PS showed synergistic effects with erythromycin, while unmodified nano-PS had no impact.

Size-dependent enhancement on conjugative transfer of antibiotic resistance genes by micro/nanoplastics

Yingying Zha et al.

Summary: In this study, the influence of polystyrene micro/nanoplastics (MNPs) on gene transfer was investigated. It was found that the effect of MNPs on gene transfer was dependent on their size, with small MNPs causing a fluctuation in gene transfer efficiency, moderate-sized MNPs increasing gene transfer efficiency, and large MNPs having minimal impact. Furthermore, the gene transfer efficiency could be further enhanced by optimizing mating time and ratio.

Effects of different types of primary microplastics on early life stages of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss)

Magdalena Jakubowska et al.

Summary: The study showed that exposure to different microplastics treatments in rainbow trout early life stages did not result in significant differences in hatching success rate, survival rate of larvae, and other indicators. Although some changes were observed in length gain after long-term exposure and yolk-sac exhaustion rate, the final size of larvae did not differ significantly from the control group.

Summary: In this study, photocatalytical and antibacterial activities of DyBa2Fe3O7.988/DyFeO3 (Dy-Ba-Fe-O) nanocomposites were investigated as eco-friendly applications. The synthesis method chosen was ultrasound technique to ensure low energy consumption and achieve a pure product with good crystallinity. Natural almond core extract was used as a green reagent. The nanocomposite exhibited a band gap of 2.6 eV, enabling visible-light photocatalysis. Significant degradation of Rhodamin-B dye and strong antibacterial activity against Gram-negative pathogens were observed. The properties of the nanocomposite were characterized by various analyses.

Interactions between bacteria and nano (micro)-sized polystyrene particles by bacterial responses and microscopy

So Yoon Kim et al.

Summary: Microorganisms play a vital role in biogeochemical cycles and interact with plastic debris. This study examined the interaction between bacteria and nano- and microplastics, finding that the diameter of the plastic particles influenced their effects on bacterial growth and viability. Smaller particles (60 nm) were observed to enter the cells and enhance the generation of reactive oxygen species, while unexpectedly, particles similar in size to the bacterial cells (1040 nm) had the greatest inhibitory effect. The bacteria also formed biofilm complexes in response to exposure to 1 μm-diameter particles.

Exposure to nanopolystyrene and its 4 chemically modified derivatives at predicted environmental concentrations causes differently regulatory mechanisms in nematode Caenorhabditis elegans

Man Qu et al.

Summary: This study compared the toxicity of nanopolystyrene and its chemically modified derivatives using a nematode model. The results showed that different modifications had different effects on lifespan, body length, locomotion behavior, and gut barrier of the nematodes. The toxicity ranking was determined as PS-NH2 > PS-SOOOH > PS-COOH > PS > PS-PEG. Additionally, evidence was presented to support the role of oxidative stress and activation of antioxidant molecules in reversing the adverse effects induced by these nanoparticles.

Environmental source, fate, and toxicity of microplastics

Chunhui Wang et al.

Summary: Microplastics, small plastic particles less than 5 mm in size, have attracted increasing global attention due to their widespread distribution in various environmental compartments. Studies show that the sources of microplastics are diverse, and their presence and impacts in the environment are influenced by multiple factors. Research gaps exist in quantitatively analyzing different exposure routes of microplastics and their toxicity to organisms. Further efforts are needed to focus on the occurrence and fate of microplastics in terrestrial environments, especially in the atmosphere and soil, as well as investigating the toxicity mechanisms of microplastics.
