Toxicity of fipronil to Folsomia candida in contrasting tropical soils and soil moisture contents: effects on the reproduction and growth

Thuanne Braulio Hennig et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the impact of three tropical soil types and soil moisture content on the toxicity and risk of the insecticide fipronil to the collembolan Folsomia candida. It was found that fipronil had the highest toxicity on collembolans in the Entisol soil type, and the toxicity was higher in drier conditions. The results also showed that fipronil concentrations reduced the size of collembolans in all tested soils, but the effect on growth was intensified under drier conditions in TAS and Entisol. Additionally, there was a significant risk of exposure to fipronil in TAS and Oxisol under drier conditions, and in Entisol regardless of soil moisture content.

Summary: TKTD models provide mechanistic understanding of individual-level toxicity over time and have great potential for ecotoxicological studies. Robust software tools are needed for automatically extracting best-fitting model parameters and quantifying their uncertainty, especially in the context of environmental risk assessment.

Residues of currently used pesticides in soils and earthworms: A silent threat?

C. Pelosi et al.

Summary: Research shows that the exposure to multiple classes of currently used pesticides poses a threat to earthworms in arable landscapes, with a high percentage of soils and earthworms contaminated at levels that could endanger these beneficial soil organisms. Chronic toxicity to earthworms was found in both treated winter cereals and untreated habitats, indicating potential negative impacts on biodiversity, recovery, and ecosystem functions. These results highlight the importance of regulating pesticides and promoting sustainable agriculture practices to address global environmental challenges.

Development and Validation of a Mixture Toxicity Implementation in the Dynamic Energy Budget-Individual-Based Model: Effects of Copper and Zinc on Daphnia magna Populations

Karel Vlaeminck et al.

Summary: Mechanistic population models such as DEBtox and GUTS have been widely used to describe toxic effects, but their applications in predicting mixture toxicity effects have been limited. This study used the DEB-IBM framework to accurately predict the population-level effects of copper and zinc on Daphnia magna, demonstrating the potential of extrapolating mixture toxicity effects at the population level from individual-level data.

What Is on the Outside Matters-Surface Charge and Dissolve Organic Matter Association Affect the Toxicity and Physiological Mode of Action of Polystyrene Nanoplastics to C. elegans

Carolin L. Schultz et al.

Summary: Surface functionalization and eco-corona formation can modulate the toxicity of nanoplastics, altering the potency and order of toxicity. The effects of surface charges on nanoplastic toxicity are primarily linked to differences in effect thresholds and dose-associated damage parameters, rather than toxicokinetic parameters. Eco-corona interactions between particles can reduce toxicity, but the order of potency of charged forms remains consistent.

Effects of insecticides on mortality, growth and bioaccumulation in black soldier fly (Hermetia illucens) larvae

Nathan Meijer et al.

Summary: This study assessed the potential effects of six selected insecticides on the growth and survival of black soldier fly larvae, finding that three did not affect larvae, while the other three had negative impacts. It was observed that cypermethrin's effects appeared to be augmented by the addition of the synergist piperonyl butoxide.

Summary: This study found that pesticides can harm soil organisms and have negative effects on soil organic matter mineralization. The presence of soil fauna also influences the mineralization of organic matter in soil.
