Low nitrogen level improves low-light tolerance in tall fescue by regulating carbon and nitrogen metabolism

Suyun Wen et al.

Summary: The present study investigates the role of low N in improving tall fescue photosynthesis under low-light (LL) stress by regulating carbon and N metabolism. The results show that low N alleviates the effects of LL stress by increasing tiller numbers, root length, root-to-shoot ratio, and sugars contents in roots, and enhancing the activities of sucrose synthase, glutamate dehydrogenase, total amylase, and glutamate synthase. Metabolomics analysis reveals that the low N treatment affects carbon and amino acid metabolism, and increases the citrate cycle and glucose and sucrose contents. This study provides insights into the mechanism by which low N improves tolerance to LL-induced stress in tall fescue.

Melatonin alleviates aluminum-induced growth inhibition by modulating carbon and nitrogen metabolism, and reestablishing redox homeostasis in Zea mays L.

Jianhong Ren et al.

Summary: In this study, it was found that melatonin treatment reduced aluminum concentration in maize roots and leaves under aluminum stress, alleviating the growth inhibition induced by aluminum. Analysis of RNA-Seq, enzyme activity, and metabolite content data showed that melatonin treatment promoted carbon and nitrogen metabolism in maize seedlings, leading to a more stable metabolic level. Additionally, melatonin treatment improved photosynthetic rate, sucrose content, nitrate reductase activity, and protein content in maize seedlings under aluminum stress.

Different antioxidant regulation mechanisms in response to aluminum-induced oxidative stress in Eucalyptus species

Yanhong Liang et al.

Summary: Forest ecosystems are important for environmental protection and ecological balance. This study found that Eucalyptus urophylla showed stronger adaptability to aluminum stress compared to E. grandis or E. tereticornis, which was attributed to higher antioxidant enzyme activity, non-enzymatic antioxidant content, and lower membrane lipid peroxidation. The hybrid offspring of E. urophylla x E. grandis inherited the outstanding adaptability to aluminum stress from E. urophylla, suggesting that aluminum tolerance is highly heritable and can be selected in Eucalyptus breeding. The results also indicated that the response of Eucalyptus to aluminum stress may vary over time and be related to changes in ROS elimination and accumulation.

Melatonin-mediated regulation of anthocyanin biosynthesis and antioxidant defense confer tolerance to arsenic stress in Camellia sinensis L

Xin Li et al.

Summary: Arsenic causes severe oxidative stress in tea leaves, while melatonin can enhance tea plants' tolerance to arsenic stress by selectively upregulating the expression of biosynthetic genes such as CsCHS and CsANS. The effectiveness of melatonin in increasing arsenic tolerance in tea plants largely depends on the basal levels of anthocyanin.

Effect of magnesium fertilization on seed yield, seed quality, carbon assimilation and nutrient uptake of rapeseed plants

Guotao Geng et al.

Summary: The study conducted on rapeseed plants grown in the Yangtze River Basin found that increasing magnesium application significantly improved seed yield, quality, and germination capacity. Magnesium fertilization also had positive effects on carbon assimilation of leaves and pods, seed oil content, unsaturated fatty acids, and uptake of nitrogen and phosphorus.

Multiomics Analysis Reveals New Insights into the Apple Fruit Quality Decline under High Nitrogen Conditions

Fen Wang et al.

Summary: The excessive application of nitrogen fertilizer in Chinese apple production was found to decrease the content of soluble sugar and flavonoids in fruits, leading to poor fruit quality. High nitrogen levels also altered the nitrogen, carbon content, and C/N ratio of apple fruits. The study revealed that high nitrogen inhibited the accumulation of carbohydrates and flavonoids in fruits, and promoted the synthesis of amino acids using more carbon skeletons. This insight provides new understanding on the effects of high nitrogen on fruit quality.
